Chromium icon missing in Gnome on Leap 16

Hello everybody, the chromium icon vanished after a zypper up yesterday (2026-01-17). Chromium is still present and I can run it from the console. I’ve reinstalled chromium from openSUSE repo (not from flathub), but the problem remains. I’ve seen an old post (2011) in which it was assumed to be a packaging problem. Does anyone else encounter the same problem? What can I do to try to solve it ?

You have not indicated which desktop environment you are using, nor where you were seeing the icon.

I am using KDE as a desktop environment. I was seeing the Chromium icon in the panel and in the menu (I think it was the favorites). After updating, I now see that replaced by Firefox. But the Internet section of the menu still has Chromium.

I’m guessing that Chromium was mistakenly set as the default browser, and the update changed that to Firefox. You should be able to configure the default browser yourself to what you want.

I’m using Gnome as desktop (as indicated in the title of the post). The icon disappeared from the dash and from the application list (it is like it was not installed). The icon has been replaced by a blue diamond that appears only when I launch chromium from the console.

And I’m unable to change the default browser from Gnome’s settings: it is like Gnome does not “see” chromium (chromium does not appear in the list of browsers). If I try to set chromium as the default browser from chromium itself, it fails.

Although I normally use KDE, I do have Gnome installed. So I logged into Gnome. And Chromium does not appear to be visible.

I suggest that you report this as a bug.

Thank you for the test that confirms the bug. I’ll report it tonight. As I’m totally new in openSUSE, a link to the bug reporting procedure would help me… (I’ve another bug to report).

The same thing happened to me in Tumbleweed Gnome with the latest snapshot (20260121). Chromium has disappeared from the list of apps, and only its Flatpak version appears as available in Gnome Software.

I’m using leap 16 with kde. The chromium app is completely missing from the kde discover software center. It does show up in my application launcher though.

It is in Discover. On a pristine Leap 16.0 install, there even is “Get Chromium Browser” in the applications menu. When clicked that fires up Discover, which shows “Imstall from Leap 16.0”. Clicking that installs it fine.

The icon and chrome are back in discover today.
