choosing opensuse

Hello
Sorry if this posting is in wrong area.
I am new to linux and am trying to make the right choice [for me] of a distro.
My machines:
Asus P5KC core2duo 3.2ghz sata drives 4 gb ram nvidia gt8500 dlink dge530t
BioStar P4M80-M4 2.4ghz ide drives 2gb ram o/b video & nic

I have been using k/x/ubuntu for about six months and [probably due, in part,to my lack of knowledge] am not really happy with ubuntu.
I have tried various desktops [kde 3/4, Gnome, xfce] alone and in combination with each other and have found some things work with some desktops, some things work with others[in ubuntu distro].[again probably due, in part,to my lack of knowledge].

The one thing that bothers me about ubuntu is that on install I get a LOT of programs I don’t want and not all of them can be uninstalled.
I am not knowledgeable enough [nor do I have the time required [there are more than one user in household] to do a from scratch linux install.
This is NOT a ubuntu bash! I am merely trying to find a distro that suits my needs. And, after all, it [ubuntu] got me away from winxp.
I have heard some people saying good things about opensuse 11 and was considering trying it. *
What I would like to know is:
1] When I do a live cd install and get whatever software comes with it, will I be able to uninstall whatever I don’t want [without problems]?
2]Will xmms work well with opensuse 11?
3]Has opensuse got the ability to use GTalk [voice chat not text chat[voip]]?
4]Where possible, I use Linux sofware and have found equivalents to most I need, however, one user in this household uses Winmx [as a chat room holder]and therefore running winmx thru wine is a MUST! Does winmx/wine work well on opensuse 11?

There are of course, always other ?'s, but answers to these will make a place for me to start.
Thank You*

Well the cd install is really quite small and minimal, most would want much more than it provides, so it is hard to see you wanting to remove it. Ubuntu/Kubuntu’s installer is also cd I know but is different to OpenSuse and more will be installed there than in Suse.

Personally, I would only recommend the dvd for install, but many use the cd. So it’s up to you.

Removing Packages can be less simple than one might like, as there are often dependency issues.

1] When I do a live cd install and get whatever software comes with it, will I be able to uninstall whatever I don’t want [without problems]?
Ans: Yes you can without any problem.
2]Will xmms work well with opensuse 11?
Ans: Sorry, Not sure about this.
3]Has opensuse got the ability to use GTalk [voice chat not text chat[voip]]?
Ans: You can use Google mail chat. For GTalk you will use another software like Pidgin. Not sure about voice chat, never experience that on Linux.
4]Where possible, I use Linux sofware and have found equivalents to most I need, however, one user in this household uses Winmx [as a chat room holder]and therefore running winmx thru wine is a MUST! Does winmx/wine work well on opensuse 11?
Ans: Yes, wine work well on openSUSE like other distros.

Wine

OpenSuSE has extremely good support for Wine, it is top-notch. It offers not only access to a tested copy of Wine through the QA process but packages for the latest development copy and the latest CVS/GIT snapshot =]

Google Talk

See: Google Talk

Officially Google Talk can not do VoIP on any GNU/Linux distribution; I suspect the answer is no - however, if Ubuntu can do it there’s no reason OpenSuSE cannot.

XMMS

I have not tested XMMS, so cannot say much beyond this:

XMMS is in a community (packman) repository only. Therefore, it does not undergo official QA from the OpenSuSE developers. However, the packman repository packages based on my experience are of good quality.

XMMS is working without any problem under 11.0.

Google Talk uses an open protocol for voice chat: Jingle.
If Wikipedia is updated any of these programs will allow you to audio chat with Windows GTalk users -> Jingle (protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Look at XMMS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
XMMS is still available in openSUSE 11.1. But probably is the only piece of used software still using GTK1… if you want to use something like XMMS I would use Audacious (a fork of a fork of XMMS), that is more updated.
