Chinese language after install on some programs

Installed OpenSUSE 12.3 KDE x64 and some programs (like YaST2,and others) are in chinese(i think…Chinese-style characters) while some are in english. I tryed installing with default location and language (only changed the hour) and still getting chinese writing…

I now have LinuxMint 14 with a separate /home partition. I formated / but kept /home(as i dont want to loose my files).

In the live enviroment everything is ok(it’s in english) but once it’s installed, chinese…

Installed from USB ( I doubt that’s the problem).

First time trying Suse, did I miss something?

What country did you tell the installation system you are at?

first time Romania, and then reinstalled it all and went with default (New York if i remember…something from the USA anyway).
Not all programs are like this, most are just fine, only some are chinese… found this when i ran the updater.

Typed “language” in the searchbar and it gave me 2 results…for the system, and for keyboard. both american. Changed to UK (fairly similar, guessed some corrupt files, so i changed the language) but to no use… still chinese stuff.

only thing particular in my setup is my /home partition, but from my knowledge, there is nothing there that could cause problems… At least not like this

and, tell if you installed them as chinese into your Mint…

hmmmm…did you check that you had a good download–like discussed
here https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Download_help#Checksums

and, did you self-test the install media by selecting “Check
Installation Media” like you see here http://tinyurl.com/b856ekd

any error in either test is too many!

YaST2 (the program used to install software)
I got a notification that i need to update(in english) and when I clicked there the update manager started but it was in chinese.
There were a few more, but i cant remember them now. tomorow ill reinstall it and post some more. Cant today as i need my computer for homework.

Nope, nothing is in chinese on mint ( i dont know chinese). Everything is in english.

Never checked the hash before, but shouldnt i have a .md5 file in the download directory? all i have is a .iso … downloaded with torrent from software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 12.3

Also, i did not test the installation media, because all was working well in the live enviroment… will do it again tomorow (although it should have been an issue in the liveCD too…)

again, could you shed some light on checking the .iso?

The help link on the download page. From memory, click on “mirrors”, you
get a page with many links; some are the checksums.

My only guess is that somehow you downloaded another install media
customized for China… A derivative. :-?

You could try installing from the DVD, it has more install choices than
the lives.

I would use metalinks for downloading, not a direct link. Instructions
on the page, but as you have mint that would mean using “aria2c”.

collect your md5 file from the download page,
http://software.opensuse.org/123/en
click the same choices above the download button (you know, 32 or 64,
DVD or KDE CD or GNOME CD etc) then look down below the download
button to the section named “Verify your download before use”

then go to http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Download_help#Checksums for how
to check…

So, md5 ok sha1 ok, disk ok (couldnt test usb for integrity, so i used a DVD)
But still getting weird simbols… Just installed google chrome and it’s also in some chinese… something from my /home must be causing this, but what?

and, you might ought to use YaST to add a new test users, log out of
your account and then log in the new test account…and go looking
for “chinese”…tell us if you find any!

Have a look at the file “/etc/sysconfig/language”. For English, you
would have:


RC_LANG="en_US.UTF-8"

Have a look at the variable “INSTALLED_LANGUAGES”, too. Then maybe have
a look at the “.profile” files of both your user and root. Or try a new
user, that would bypass the inherited home.

You should be able to force Yast to start in English by doing it this way:


su -
LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 yast2 --qt &

(or --gtk if you prefer)
