CheckHardware error Suse 11

When I try to play any sounds on my laptop, I get the following KDE error dialog box:
KDEInit could not launch ‘CheckHardware’.: Could not find ‘CheckHardware’ executable.

Have re-installed all HAL related stuff. Have added myself to the audio users group, have updated everything even remotely related to sound.

I got it to play a test sound once in YAST when I was configuring things. But I get the same pop-up when I try to play any sounds.

Have uninstalled and re-installed the driver. No change. It worked well with Suse 10.1 and 10.3 but doesn’t like suse 11.0.

Box specs:
Dell inspiron E1505
OpenSuse 11.0
Kernel: 2.6.25.18-0.2-default
Sound card: Internal 82801 G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
Driver: snd-hda-intel
I think it’s an intel sound card but really don’t know.

Open to any suggestions.

Thanks

Update:

Ran through the SDB troubleshooting guide and had all kindsa output for you but lost it. Will have to run it again when I’ve got more time. But it didn’t solve my problem either.

Did you find out what your codec was? Did you search for your codec on the alsa web site? Did you update alsa if there were updates for the codec? Those instructions are all in the guide.

Anyway, no worries if you did not, … please just provide some information instead. …

To provide more information, with your PC connected to the internet copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or konsole:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh

When the script completes it will pass you a URL. Please post that URL here.

Also, please copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or konsole and post the output here.rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

Once you have posted that information, either myself or someone else may be able to provide helpful recommendation(s).

I suspect you have a STAC9200 and will have to add the model option “dell-m25” to your /etc/modprobe.d/sound with a very specific syntax, but we can cross that bridge after you provide the above requested information.

Sorry for the long delay. I managed to get it working with Suse 11.0. Not sure now what I did. But now I’m having the same problems with Suse 11.1.

The error is: KDEInit couldn’t launch ‘CheckHardware’ Could not find ‘CheckHardware’ executable.

I don’t get it with DVD’s – they work fine. I get it with mp3 playback. I think I have all the right things installed from packman. I forced updates on most things but it’s still not working. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here’s the URL from Alsa-info:

What are you using for mp3 playback? If DVD’s are playing, you obviously have sound working.
I think I already quoted you this in another thread:
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

Tried amarok and xmms, I get the error shown above when I try.

Make sure amarok is using the xine engine for sound
What version of amarok?

Amarok version = 1.4.10 (Using KDE 3.5.10 "release 21.11 openSUSE)

VLC and Totem play fine. Only have one engine installed and it’s Gstreamer/Yauap. Will try to install the xine engine.

Think I found it. Looks like I didn’t have Amarock from Packman.

That got it for Amarok, but not for XMMS. Any suggestions for that?

Never use XMMS, when I tried it ages ago I wrote it off as a bad experience.
sorry I can’t offer any help there

Yeah, it doesn’t really stack up, but since I had everything working before this build, I figgered I’d try to get it all working again.
