Hi!
In KDE3:
Go to Personal Setting -> Appearance -> Splash Screen and select another one.
You’ll find a lot of interesting splash themes on Eyecandy for your KDE-Desktop - KDE-Look.org.
ps.: in KDE4 - search for similar options in Personal Settings/Configure Desktop
There are three screens you could be talking about. The KDE splash, which is ref’d in the post above. There is the green grub boot loader menu screen. And the splash screen that displays with a progress bar at boot as the kernel loads the system. These latter 2 are handled entirely differently. Search in the wiki for splash screen and grub splash and you’ll find the articles.
ehm…i’ve gnome…
There are 2 screens, the 1 used by Gnome’s login manager - gdm - for, well, logging in, and then the splash screen which displays the animated/audio Gnome logo. I can’t say how these are changed (although I know they can be). But google on something like “gnome gdm login screen” or “gnome splash” (depending on which you want to change), and you will get lots of hits. Also take a look at gnome-look.org.
