Changing graphics cards 13.1

I’ve tried Googling for this but knowing what’s up-to-date is tricky and I can’t afford for the PC to be out of service for long when I switch.

I simply want to change the graphics card on a PC. How do I get X to reconfigure the driver? (I could do it in the old sax days.)

Thanks for your help.

From what to what???

Do you have any propritary video drivers installed??

It’s currently an old Nvidia card with whatever was automatically configured when the system was installed (nouveau?). I don’t know what the replacement card will be yet. I have a box of bits I need to dig around in. Whatever it is, it will be a few years old.

I need to replace this card because it’s playing up and getting worse.

Thanks.

For me it’s always just pull it out and replace
Stick with nvidia is my suggestion too

The X-server will largely take care of this automatically at boot (using open source drivers). For NVIDIA (or AMD hardware), you can then decide on wthether to install proprietary drivers.

… which, personally, I would recommend. In fact, give it a try, first, as it might even solve the “it is acting up lately” problems. Worth a try.
