Hi I am now running Linux 3.4.33-2.24-desktop x86_64, System: openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64) KDE: 4.8.5 (4.8.5) “release 2” and last night’s update, which required a re-boot, has changed the View behavior when using Dolphin.
I used to use the “compact” view setting and the files would be listed down the left hand side and if the list was too long for the window there I would scroll down to see the bottom. Now there is no scroll available but if list is too long for the window a second list starts on the right of the screen.
The “details” view is as before but the size and date info is always shown complete and the file name and ending truncated if there is no room on screen, leaving the important info hidden.
I assume this is yet another unwanted and stupid KDE “bright idea”, but how can I revert to previous View mode please?

Never having used ‘compact’ mode until I just now tried it, I can’t
help on that. However, have you tried ‘details’ mode and removed the
‘size’ and ‘date’ columns? I think that would give you what you seemed
to have had before with ‘compact.’ Instead of that, you could change
from ‘automatic column widths’ to ‘custom . . .’ to keep the column
widths as you would like. These options can be found by right-clicking
on the column heading.

When you see a connection with the updates, it could be interesting to know which updates were done. When you e.g. did not do updates before yesterday for a year, there is considarable more to check then when you did the last before yesterday a week ago.
My last update (from the Update repos) was about a week ago. I normaly do use Detailed, but when I switch to Compact, I have two columns as you describe.
Thus when this is because of an update it is not in those that are still pending in my case:
. libqt4
. kernel (the reboot of course)
. flash-player
. xorg-x11-server
. timezone (two of them)
. Softwarestack update (which will withoput doubt go first and alone before the others)
Hi and thanks for the reply. Ok I have just done a new installation to move to 12.2 about a week ago. I used network install and kept my old /home directory. After the network install a massive online update is required which I completed at the time. I then set the view behaviour to what I normally use and all was well. Since then I have only done a couple of online updates together with routine set-up downloads such as Packman/multimedia, Printers, etc. If you remind me how to find it I can post the log.
More depressing is that the behaviour appears now to be normal. I have real issues with the Dolphin display and this is the last straw. Any ideas on how to revert would be appreciated.
Finally and more relevant to this forum, I installed the 12.2 version on a new root partition, keeping the previous 12.1 installation in case I had to revert. I used to be able to boot either from the grub screen but after this last update I can no longer boot to 12.1 . When I try, I get an error message saying the kernel must be loaded first. Seems like grub has been damaged/altered. Not a big problem as I seem to be making progress with 12.2 but I was also thinking of trying 12.3. I don’t want to try that and find I can’t get back to 12.2. Any thoughts?
Please do not hang a new question on an existing thread. That is even worse that posting in the wrong sub-forum. When you do not start a new thread in the correct forum with a good telling title, how do you ever think you will atrackt the right people to your problem? It will like your problem is gone down a black hole. You should try to imagine how forums like these function. Volunteers look through the titels of new threads in sub-forums where they think they can help. And they decide reading he title if they are going to read the thread. You must adverstise! It is not a helpdesk were an employee has to read the next problem in sequence regardless of what her/his real knowledge is.
And on your Dolphin problem. It seesm to be a change inn Dolphin and thus in KDE. My advise would be to go to the KDE forums. There you will find the KDE experts and even some devs (my experience). They are at: Index page • KDE Community Forums
