Does anybody know how to change the prompt in the terminal window?
Currently mine is listed as:
$cavan@CDWZEAKE02K3-EKWOKKEOXLELG >
I would like to remove those random characters. I tried changing the $HOSTNAME variable but that doesn’t do it.
I then tried to modify the .bashrc file in ~ by exporting a custom PS1 variable. but for some reason the /h in my PS1 only recognizes the random string of characters as my host. How can I change this?
This isn’t really a problem, it just looks like crap and takes up line space when working with long commands.
Thank-you for the detailed description. That random string of
characters is probably the hostname being given to your machine by DHCP.
Yast: Network Devices: Network Card. Go modify one of your NICs and
notice that you can set the host name in there.
Good luck.

Oh, and also, uncheck the checkbox that says to update your hostname via
DHCP once you have it set to something you want to keep.
You can also verify this string of jibberish is your hostname by typing,
of all things:
hostname
Good luck.
