Change a nvidia video card for an amd one

Introduction:

I am building a new pc. This new pc will have the nvidia video card, from my current pc.

In the current pc, I want to replace the nvidia card for an AMD, hd 5700

Old pc runs leap 42.3

How do I do this ?

Do I need to uninstall the nvidia drivers first ? Then just shut down and replace the vid card ?

Or will the fact that leap 42.3 has reached end of life, cause issues ?

I am hoping I wont have to re install suse on the old pc.

There is allot of data on the old pc (home partition ) , I hope to copy to the new pc.

Hi
Wouldn’t hurt to remove the driver (and the blacklist file in /etc/modprobe.d), then rebuild initrd with mkinitrd. Power off, replace card and boot the system with the new card, should pick up the radeon driver fine.

Thank you

I think I found the file to delete.

The one that says black list nouveau ?

nvidia-default.conf

Hi
yes that’s the one

Thank you

I am typing this with the nvidia video card removed.

I did as was suggested above. For some reason though, the monitor did not come on with the HD5700 card in the mobo. :?

I then put the monitor cable in the onboard video connection of the mobo, and that worked.

I am totally confused though. I was using that HD5700 in the new pc I am buiding yesterday, and although I had to use the vga connection it was working.

Vga because I am using some old monitor, that does only has vga.

Could this be caused because I went in to the bios ?

When I typed ( after some google) xrandr, all seem fine. Desktop res 1680 x1050.

I might just ignore it. Old pc is working fine with onboard graphics, so I can use it.
Old pc wont be used for games anymore so the onboard vid is good enough.

Hardware info:
RS880 ( Radeon HD 4290 )

One question though, why is there no display in yast anymore ?
I have used that to check the desktop resolution, with out having to type xrandr.

Hi
Check your BIOS setting for use of either the onboard or PCI(e) card.

Not sure about YaST, always used the deskop tool or xrandr…

Thank you found it, I was used to look in yast for it and also found vids of older suse versions, that do have it in yast.

But settings, system settings, has what I was looking for.

Hi
Ahh yes, the SaX tool from memory
