Well I’ve been testing this Alpha 4 for Chakra on my other system and felt like posting to maybe get other’s to try it out if they are looking for an Arch Linux type system.
First off it’s basically Arch Linux + KDE Mod rolled in with a pretty smart installer (it’s still a work in progress though) and a great little Package Manager called “Shaman”. Shaman was what really impressed me, It’s very slick, fit’s in really well with KDE and imho even outshines YaST in the way it looks (takes on everything from KDE setting’s).
The overall integration of KDE is really well done and thought out. It’s definatly not a replacement for OpenSuse by any mean’s if your looking for a “reliable” system. But for those who like to have one system running “bleeding” edge stuff it’s def worth a look.
The base of Arch Linux mean’s it’s not nearly as friendly as OpenSuse is and doesn’t cater much for new user’s. But if like me you’ve been around linux a while and just want to try stuff on another system it’s a pretty good choice.
Def one to keep an eye on, I think OpenSuse could have a little competition in the future for the “best” KDE integration.
Like I’ve said though this is just a “general” post. I didn’t put it in Soapbox as I’m not saying people should switch or trying to downplay OpenSuse in anyway (i use OpenSuse on my main machine and my laptop, Chakra was on my Test System (an old as the hills Dell Dual Xeon server). I put it here for people to have a look at and maybe stay upto date on as the KDE integration is almost on par with OpenSuse.
Anyways if people are interested in taking a look
I think some of the ideas in there could work quite well in OpenSuse aswell, not much is done differently, but Shaman is sort of what I would like to see YaST become. More integrated into the way KDE doe’s thing’s.
