Certification

Hey guys,

I am looking to move in my career towards Linux administration. I already have a diploma in Computer Networking and Tech support and have worked helpdesk for 5 years. I already have a pretty solid background in Linux (Suse and Red Hat) and was wondering what is a good cert to obtain to reach this goal? I was looking at the SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Administration Course 3102. How useful would a cert like this be towards a Linux based job?

Should I go the RedHat route or is Suse/Novell certification held in the same regard?

Thanks guys!

Just to confuse you^W^W increase your choices, you can also get LPI qualifications: Home - LPI -.

I’m biased (as I’m the testing program manager at Novell), but I think
the SLE certifications are better. I think, though, asking in a SUSE
forum (openSUSE or Novell), your answers are going to tend to run in
favour of the Novell certifications.

The thing to remember is that a certification from any vendor or
organisation (LPI is a good one too, I hold LPIC-1 along with CLP10) is
that it defines a baseline of skills and knowledge. From that
standpoint, the certifications are remarkably similar across the board.
This is because Linux is Linux is Linux is Linux.

There are some things that are unique - for example, SUSE (open- and SLE)
uses YaST for centralised administration, and uses AppArmor for Mandatory
Access Controls. RedHat uses their own admin tools and SELinux (SUSE
does have an option for SELinux as well, I’ve noticed, but the AppArmor
stuff is supposed to be much easier to manage - but I’ve used neither
extensively).

i’ve had the chance to listen to some folks around who are currently
at the level in several companies (including Google) to make the who
gets hired decisions (to both administrator and development
postitions–i’m listening to several folks in several
countries)…and, with very few exceptions they agree that no matter
the source or specific cert (like RH vs SLE_, community technical
school or university campus) those kinds of things are only used to
help decide who gets interviewed and who does not…

its like, the cert and your experience gets you in the door for a
talk, or not…once in the door they will very soon learn if you
can do the job or just have a nice set of diplomas you picked up
with partying five nights a week and just barely scraping by…

some even come here asking technical questions hoping we will do their
homework thinking for them—my guess is those folks might get in the
door, but not a place to come back to day after day…

so, what i think is the answer to your question may not be as
important as you think: get all the certs/education and experience you
can…because what i hear is an experienced RH admin who can answer
the basic Linux Admin questions asked in an interview has a better
chance getting hired by a SLE_ based outfit than a unexperienced
SLE_ Certified who doesn’t have the depth of understanding which comes
with experience…and, study…

ymmv, i’m just relaying what i have heard…
