I tried to install the “cernlib” libraries under openSuse 11.0
and Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10.
For non-physicists let’s say that Cernlib is a software package developped at CERN (the European Center for Nuclear Research) over a couple of decades.
These codes are still being used by the scientific community worlwide. Nonetheless, I was not able to find a rpm or any other kind of distribution of these codes that can be installed and used under Suse Linux. I also tried to compile the cernlib libraries starting from source code but I also failed.
On the other hand, it is quite straightforward to get these beasts up an working under e.g. Ubuntu (just “sudo aptitude install cernlib” and that’s it).
Hi
WOW!! just had a look at a couple of source rpms for redhat, there are
a bazillion patches to remove stuff and fixes. It would be a big job to
get it building on openSUSE/SLE it is do-able but would be very time
consuming…
