Cell phone

My Samsung Galaxy S6 died the other day. I think, perhaps, the wireless charging pad got it too hot and fried something. I ended up with a Pixel 3a, which I’m happy with but thought I would see if there is a possibility of getting use out of the old phone. I’m looking to see if there is a linux installation for that phone.

The phone is in an endless loop of rebooting and trying to update its software. Eventually, it comes to a screen with a large yellow triangle containing an exclamation point. Below that is a dead android logo. Below that is says “no command” I assume it means the operating system is corrupted. There are suggested fixes to be found on the web, but none have helped. I’m curious to find out if there is a linux os that I can force onto this phone to get some use out of it.

Hi
Can you get to the android recovery screen, power on holding the volume up or down key?

The KDE folks have “Plasma Mobile” in an “under development” state – it runs on a ported ARM or Intel Linux Kernel …

There’s also this fairly recent (this year) article: <https://itsfoss.com/open-source-alternatives-android/>.

I’ve gotten to the recovery screen, but it shows the android robot and the message is that it is updating the system. There is a pair of dots at the top left of the screen, leading me to believe there is a second screen available. However, nothing will move me to another screen. After a short time, the screen goes to the one I described earlier with the message “no command.”

Hi
Then use the vol up/down should get you to the menu to do a complete reset… so did you try the opposite of what your doing to get into recovery, eg power on+ vol up, or power on +vol down.

The vol keys should get you where you need to be to clear the cache etc and restore.

These are interesting. But, I see no way to implement any of them. No installation links seem to be available. My fear is that this phone is so dead, I won’t be able to install a new OS. But, I have the hardware, so why not play with it? That said, the sites name specific phones their software will work on. I don’t see the Galaxy S6 anywhere. :frowning:
