CD/DVD-RW not found

Hi All,

I decided to replace Windows 7 with OpenSuSE 12.3 x86-64bit and KDE on my laptop, mainly for fun. I really like the looks of it and I’m already getting used to using the shell commands once in a while. Everything else seems to be working fine, but I’m afraid I need some consultation with detecting the CD/DVD-RW. I haven’t managed to find any answers on Google, maybe I didn’t have the correct search terms.

So, the problem is that the CD drive is not detected in SuSE, as I see it. Or, I just can’t find it in system (if that’s the case please give me a hint how to find it). If I insert any disc, audio or video or data, self-burnt with the same laptop or bought one, doesn’t make any difference.

Bios does recognize it, so did Win7. For a couple of days I also had Ubuntu 12.04 installed inside Win7, Ubuntu didn’t recognize the drive but Windows did. Before installing SuSE, I formatted the hard disk and booted from OpenSuSE installation DVD and, as the setup didn’t recognize the DVD anymore I performed an Ethernet installation.

According to BIOS, the drive is

Optiarc DVD RW AD-7540A-(PM)
Transfer mode: FPIO 4 / DMA 2
Ultra DMA mode: Mode 2

The laptop is Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Xa 2528 with AMD Turion 64 (X2 Mobile Technology TL-50)

I understand it’s possible that this drive simply is not supported on Linux, I’d just like to know what’s the name of the case.

Which desktop?

In KDE there is a device notifier widget that will pop up if you put a disk in or any other removable device. Not sure about Gnome but probably something like it. In any case it should be installed by default but if you messed with the panel at the bottom you may have removed it?? So you can add it back if it is not there by unlocking widgets (rightclick dektop) and adding widgets etc

Also if KDE there is be default a burning program called K3b it should be in the menu it should show the disk if in the player/burner in ant case it will give more info

It is normal that DVD drive is not detected after upgrading to Win 7. I think deleting the upper filter and lower filter will solve the problem. Here is the detailed guides for your reference:

  1. Type “regedit” in the Start Search box, and then open the Registry Editor
  2. Extend the registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click “Delete”.
  4. Click “Yes” to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
  5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
  6. Click “Yes” to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
  7. Exit Registry Editor, and then reboot the computer.

Just have a try. If still doesn’t work, you can refer to this article and find some other possible solutions.

The desktop I am using is KDE 4.10.5 “release 1”.

@lizlee, I haven’t upgraded to Win 7. I removed Windows and installed OpenSuSE and that’s all I’ve got on this laptop now.

I think it must be a Grub problem in some way. Is there any way I can “force” a hardware to be found, in Grub command line or some other way?

Do you think it would be of use to unplug and replug the drive and see if it gets detected? It requires some work I think as this is a laptop but I might try it.

Any sense updating the firmware with Liggy’s and Dee’s modified ones (and is that possible if the drive isn’t detected at all)?

Any idea if some other cd/dvd drive fits Fujitsu Amilo Xa 2528 frame? I might simply purchase a new drive which is better known to work under Linux, if one exists.

Guys, I need your expertise, very little information on this can be found with the help of mr. Google.

Do you see in the /dev either or all cdrom or cdrw or dvd or dvdrw??

If you don’t then the system simply is not seeing the hardware. either very strange hardware or it is broken

Yeah it may be a strange hardware… however, I’m quite sure it’s not broken as it worked perfectly a week ago under Win 7 and it still works if I put in a bootable disc and boot.

Specifically, you’re looking for /dev/sr0 (or similar). What does the following command report?

/usr/sbin/hwinfo --cdrom

And please post the whole output of “ls -l /dev/sr*” as well. It shouldn’t be a directory, so your listing of directories-only doesn’t tell anything.

These both point to the fact that your optical device is not detected (or is faulty). Maybe the internal connector/cabling is the problem too.

I note that this is quite an old laptop, and there are old threads (various distros) describing similar issues for this type of DVD/CD drive unit. (AFAIU, this unit should be supported by the ata_piix kernel driver.) FWIW, I’ve seen references that suggest the BIOS configuration can be altered, but this depends on the laptop, so YMMV. Anyway, you may want to check your BIOS out as per this post

You may need to research further and trawl for other online threads discussing this hardware. Much of it shouldn’t be relevant since the Linux kernel (and associated kernel modules) have undergone considerable development since some of the stuff I found, (hence I was reluctant to share them).

No, and if it is faulty then no config magic will help. If it was just a kernel driver issue, we could probably submit a bug report, but I’m not convinced that this is the issue. Do read my last post (which you may have missed) regarding possible BIOS configuration…

Once possible test - can you boot from it? (For example, a Windows, openSUSE install DVD, or some other LiveCD/DVD). Doing so means that we do have a Linux kernel driver issue.

I didn’t miss that one! :slight_smile: I checked that IDE/ACPI thing on BIOS earlier already and I think I don’t have that option, maybe my BIOS can be updated or more options are somewhere hiding, I may try and find some more info on that idea…

I tried inserting Win 7 disc and booted, installation starts perfectly.

That user only posted here once and never came back. His post is
suggestive of spam, as this is a LINUX forum, and his “solution” is for
Windows. This thread is about a problem with Linux, and the Original
Poster is not using Windows at all. So Mr lizlee guidance seems
completely misguided and useless here.

So, please Mr jerryliu2011, just start a new thread and state your
actual problem in detail. Do not hand on an old thread.

But, if you have problems with Windows and your DVD, then you are in the
wrong forum. We know nothing about Windows. You are welcome to destroy
it and install Linux instead, then we will be happy to help. >:-)
