CD/DVD not automounting

I saw an earlier thread on this but I’m still stymied.

Running 11.3 x86-64. If I insert a cd/dvd into the drive, the drive is not
mounted. I can mount the drive manually and the drive then works - just no
automount. Tried with CD, DVD, both data and music formats - no go.

A sandbox installation on the box works as expected so it’s not hardware. I
tried deleting the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules file, rebooted -
no change. USB devices automount just fine and a Virtualbox WinXP session
with pass-through to the device works just fine.

I can’t find any differences between the setup on the 2 installations so
it’s time to holler for HELP!! I’m about out of hair to tear out.

If you are using KDE, you may find you need to configure Knotify. Unfortunately, the configuration dialogue only appears when you have something attached. So attach something that is recognised and then right click on the Knotify icon to configure it.

Right, using KDE. This does not change anything - even rebooted after
changing the notifier settings to match the instance that does work. Of
note, if I watch the “My Computer” app while I plug stuff into system any
USB device appears instantly but is not necessarily mounted (depends on
settings) not does the mount folder appear /media. Once I select the device
via the notifier, the /media folder is created.

If I insert a DVD/CD, nothing shows up in the “My computer” app nor in the
notifer app. If I have a DVD/CD in the drive during boot, it shows up in
the “My Computer” app and the notifier app and selecting it from the
notifier mounts it under /media. If I eject (or just manually pull the
disc) it still remains in “My Computer” and the notifier. If I insert a
different disc, the system will attempt to mount the original disc and fail
but it will not mount the new one. I have to manually unmount the disc that
was resent during boot. This tells me that the actual device mount is
falling over. If it weren’t for the fact that automount works over a
virtually identical alternate installation on the same machine I would be
thinking hardware issues but given the success on one instalation and not
the other I have to conclude that I’ve put a fat finger somewhere - I just
can’t see where!
