CD/DVD Media not Automouting

CD/DVD Media not Automouting I have had this problem since installing 10.3 and now 11.0. It was fine with 10.2. My drives 2 DVD-RW will stop auto-mounting media. I have posted this in previous forums and never really been able to nail it down. I was hoping that someone might have stumbled on an answer now.

So here is what the system logs say.

Some things that have tried in the past.

First question usually is, are you sure the drive is good? The answer is yes, they are 2 different drives from two different manufactures, one is only 6 months old and works perfectly fine from other OS’s.

In the past (10.3) I could enable irqpoll and suffer a performance decrease for stability; however, after the installation of 11.0 this makes the machine freeze. I mean freeze in the true sense. Keyboard, screen, mouse, magic key combinations to drop X and get to a different run level. Nothing works when it freezes.

Next question is usually does your Motherboard have the latest BIOS Update. Yes updated yesterday.

I have also tried enabling/disabling SMART.

Many have asked if I have updated the firmware of my drives. All I can find are windows drivers for these drives.

Information on the hardware/OS is

Motherboard: ASUS M2V-MX AM2
Drives Master: IDE1-ASUS 1608-P3S
IDE2 DH-20A4P-04
Power Supply: Thermaltake Spirit (plenty of power and more)
Hard Drive: 160 WD SATA 3
Processor: AMD Athlon 64X2 4200+
Video Card: Nvidia 8600 GT (nvidia driver)
OS: OpenSUSE 11.0 64 bit

Don’t know what else would be useful/interesting. I have tried putting both of the drives on the same IDE channel with no change in failure rate. Also tried booting in Failsafe and that does not change the behavior either.

As you can see, I have tried about everything I can think of and many suggestions that I did not think of but received from others. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Other than this little glitch I must say that on my other computers OS11 works wonderfully.

excuse me if this is stupid (because you have already thought of it,
but) ten years ago or more, and old guy (with roots in big iron, in the
60’s) said: “always look at the cables first”

if you don’t have a way to check that both hardware AND cables work
(like booting to the dark side) then, i’d suggest you hook up the drives
with a KNOWN GOOD data cable and try again…

if ya look at the data cables that usually ship with OEM machines and/or
retail packaged DVD drives/recorders you might notice that they don’t
usually appear to be of an extremely high quality…

good luck,
DenverD

Thank you for your response. I may doubt one but the other, is a high quality one that I purchased and ran the HDD on another older machine without a problem. I at first had both drives on this cable and then bought the second one to try an troubleshoot this issue, thinking that it might be a Master/Slave issue.

My current thinking is it is most likely a motherboard/OS issue as OS worked on my older computer with the same ASUS drive. I have thought about getting a new mb but need a bit more $$$ available before doing that.

What mean by not auto mounting Ok in the past when you for instance a cd or dvd then a window pup with question what suse should do with.
Now with suse 11 it seems that nothing happens,
but if you put for instance a audio cd in the drive and open a cd player than it starts playing I have not yet try it with k3b

regards

I should have been more explicit, the drive is non-responsive. Nothing pops up, audio cds are not registered to amarok, blank cd’s not seen by K3B. Also when trying to manually mount the drive, it eventually times out and in the error logs I get the same as mentioned above.

On a similar note, on my installation, when I insert a CD and the drive is working I still get the old familiar pop-up.

Yast hardware information does it shows a cd or
dvd the strange is that show mine as cd while it
is DVd ,but at least it is working

Both are listed as a CD-Rom, I think it is just generic though because in /dev/ they both have cdrom, and dvdrw linked back to sr0 and sr1.

I think I may have solved this one. It has been a whole 2 days without this error returning and without adding any extra boot configurations.

The solution I found was to re-install OpenSuSE. However, this time instead of installing the 64 bit version, I decided to install the 32 bit version.
