CD burning problems

I am trying to burn CDs in K3b, Brassero and Graveman but they all fail. K3B which I have used for some time without trouble fails after 3% of the burn process with a unknown 255 cdrecord error or an error suggesting burning using TAO, which fails as well.

I tried installing cdrtools but this reports an error that it needs cdrecord. cdrecord is installed version 2.01.01a03-dvd.

Wodim is version 1.1.7.1

are there any known bugs or fixes for this problem. thanks for any help.

Sounds suspiciously like a hardware issue, have you used the hardware with another OS?
Check this:
Flash, k3b, Amarok - Install Guide - openSUSE Forums

Set burn speed to as low as possible.

No I only run OpenSuse on my maching, it will read CDs ok and will write to DVDs. I have in the past been able to burn CDs on this machine with this distro and am wondering if it could be an update that has caused the problem but have no idea when the problem started. I’ve tried lower burn speeds but no luck.

It does sound like a hardware problem but is perhaps not if it writes to dvd. Might be worth updating k3b to the latest version from the packman website:-

PackMan :: Package details for k3b

or if you are using kde4

PackMan :: Package details for kde4-k3b

You should also install the codec rpm as well.

Try downloading a trial copy of Nero Linux and see how that works. I use it and I like the encoding part really well. I still use K3B but I have had good luck with Nero even if I had to pay for it. Try using a different CD burner and see if it is a hardware problem.

I’ve updated the software but still getting a 254 cdrecord error. A while ago I was gettting a permissions error with K3B, until I changed the permissions of the DVD drive then I got the error 254 error message, I’ve added the debug output of K3B in case there is anything obvious I’ve missed:

Have you tried a different make of CD’s. You say DVD’s are OK. So I just got to thinking, maybe the CD’s are crumby.

Post the result of:

rpm -qi k3b k3b-codecs

I tried a Verbatim 4x CD-RW which was successfull this morning so I’ll check out some other makes.

The ones I was using which failed were a Kodak 52x CD-R and a cheap 52X from the supermarket, perhaps it’s speed related as well, I’ll try some diffent makes and speeds.
Here’s the result of rpm -qi k3b k3b-codecs

Good you have Packman’s

let us know how you get on

It’s still a bit flakey. I seem to have most luck with CD-RWs, I can write to these which have a burn speed of 4x but an audio burn won’t play on my computer but will on my car CD player. Any of the write only disks I’ve tried (2 makes as in my previous post) have failed, the kodak disk with an error of “unable to fix disk” the cheap ones fail to burn altogether. The lowest speed that K3B will let me write to these is 8x.

I’ll pick up some good quality write only disks at the weekend to see if it’s any better with these. I haven’t had any trouble even with the cheapest disks in the past though.

Still no good, K3B just won’t burn CDRs. I did burn a CDR using Webmin succesfully which will read on another machine (desktop), but not on the laptop I burned it on, the inserted burnt disk shows as a blank CDR.

I don’t think that there is anything wrong with the hardware as the drive reads any data disk I put in and seems to burn ok with webmin. Not sure which way to look next.

I have been having issues with this myself.
Burner works perfectly but burning disks it craps out.
I think cdrecord is bugged
