Case-sensitive

I inadvertently learned that passwords are not case-sensitive here. I’ve never seen this before. Is this really a good idea?

I’m in no way a *nix-ologist but no, that would :bad: not be a good idea.
That being said, all my passwords are all case-sensitive and I can’t :sarcastic: imagine why yours wouldn’t be as well…

Thanks :good: for posting your observation, I’ll be anxiously watching to see what the more experienced think.

how in the world did you pick this forum to post to? it is not a help
forum and you have to scroll down for 15 years (or seconds) past all
the help forums to get to this one which says in an internationally
understood lingo: Forums Comments/Suggestions - Comments and/or
suggestions about the openSUSE forums

so, first: what is your suggestion or comment about these forums?

second: passwords are absolutely case sensitive in a default
installed openSUSE…so, one three things has happened:

  1. either your system has been damaged by a faulty install: did you do
this http://tinyurl.com/yajm2aq before install attempt? or

  2. your system has been recently damaged by an update or something you
did as root (but, i can NOT imagine what file (or how many different
    files) has been changed…

  3. have you checked around for a root kit hidden in the cracks
    somewhere???

Hm, my thought at reading this on this place was: is the Forums password case insensitive (he said: here)?

Because it seems he’s asking about the forums password, not the passwords
in openSUSE.

Most of the forums I have looked at use case-insensitive passwords
because adding case-sensitivity to the picture tends to increase support
calls.

Since the password ties back to the www.novell.com user store, here we
just use what the settings are there.

I’ve never heard of this before. Seems like a bad idea, just in principle if nothing else.

I’ve been doing identity-related security stuff for years - case-
sensitivity is a relatively recent development in password security (in
general). It doesn’t surprise me that many forums opt not to use it
because it’s a leading cause of password-related issues.

That’s all right, I’ll save your advice. Could turn out to be useful.
