I tried an openSUSE 11.1 Gnome Live CD with an older PC; there the floppy worked well. Then, same CD in my current PC; behaviour as described.
Because the floppy worked with Windows 7 and the kernel version from the LiveCD already worked with a floppy, it had to be an issue with the motherboard.

Then I asked Big Google for “+fd0 +problem +M4A78T-E” and the first hit was the solution. lol!

This was much cheaper than the above mentioned algorithms…
