can't start x - Dell Precision M4300 - NVidia FX Quadro 360M

Hi

I’m trying to get openSUSE 11 on my laptop (dual boot) with XP. The install seemed to go ok, but x won’t start - I just get a terminal screen. Note that this was further than Ubuntu 8.04 (or 7.10) got - they froze up during the installation.

So, does anyone have any suggestions on how I should proceed? I’m guessing this is a driver problem. The laptop is a Dell Precision M4300 with a NVidia FX Quadro 360M graphics card and a WUXGA (1920 x 1200) display. How do I go about updating the driver or telling x which driver to use?

Any opinions or comments are appreciated.

Hi
Have a look here;

Malcolm, I owe you one. I followed the ‘hard way’ instructions in that link you supplied. Worked like a charm.

Just to provide a few details to anyone else who runs into this problem:
I just had a terminal so the ‘1-click install’ wasn’t available to me. I searched yast to get gcc, make and kernal-source. I then used wget to get the latest nvidia driver from nvidia.com (after searching the site for the appropriate link), then followed the remaining instructions on the link you provided, ‘Install the drivers’ and ‘configure X.org’.

I anticipated another struggle to get wireless working, but it seems fine.

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.
