I got a Hannspree 19’ monitor. If i use a VGA cable (fuzzy image a bit) then i can set 75 Hz refresh frequency but when i use DVI i can’t and it always stays on 60Hz. I already installed .inf file for this monitor and i still can’t set higher refresh frequency. Which tool’s can i use to set refresh frequency except nvidia-settings? (I got 8800GT if it helps at all?)
So YAST correctly identifies both your card and your monitor?
What happens when you increase the vertical and horizontal rates in YAST?
Do you know the exact frequencies for your monitor? If not, the manufacturer may list them on its website.
#1 yast sees it only as vesa monitor, nvidia-settings not better, still another monitor
#2when i increase it it blinks as it were changing frequency but it’s still 60Hz
#3i know the exact frequencies (do You mean simple 144_90_75 or the other which has bunch of numbers in it?).
None of the Linux systems could set higher frequency than 60Hz (while on XP it worked without a hitch)
By the way has sax2 option vesa for 75Hz vertical refresh?? I can’t see any.
Maybe it could work if there was option for 1440x900@75 Hz
But there is only 60Hz?? Every other has alternative option of 75 Hz
OK, so when you loaded the “Utility Driver” in sax2, did you exit the x-server first and go into text mode and start sax2 from there?
Reason being, I believe that for settings in sax2 to “stick” I believe you have to exit the x-server first.
You know how to do that, right? If not, you go to the terminal and type su, enter root password, then type init 3.
Screen goes blank, and then you log in as root and enter the command
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
From there you can go to “Change Settings” insert the utility disc for the monitor, etc. then reboot when you’re done by hitting control-alt-delete.
One other question, if you enter the command nvidia-settings does the applet that come up confirm that you are using the nvidia driver?
It doesn’t change anything. I even tried adding additional vesa mode with 75Hz mode but no, it didn’t work. I have to live with 60Hz (good its a LCD or else i would bleed else my eyes would bleed heavily rotfl!)
I wonder if your monitor is sending DPMS data preventing the refresh rate from going above 60hz. Is the “Activate DPMS” box under sax2 / monitor checked or unchecked?
You might play around with that, and try entering your manufacturer’s recommended vertical and horizontal refresh rates. Be careful though, you don’t want to zap your monitor.
i think when a digital (DVI) connection is used, with all if not most lcd monitors a refresh rate of 60hz is all that can be used.
i don’t know exactly why, but my best guess is that it is a limit (and tradeoff) of the technology.
Use the lcd instead of vesa
