I have KDE 4.6.5 and (up until now) I could see and access files and folders on my Desktop. My Desktop was set to display the contents of /home/john/Desktop. I set this up from Right-click → Folder View Settings → View → Layout → Folder View. Then Location → specify a folder == /home/john/Desktop.
But now when I do this I don’t see the contents of the /home/john/Desktop folder. Instead I see a blank screen with a tab on the RHS labeled “New Activity”.
How do I revert to viewing the traditional Desktop and its traditional contents?
Are you able to right-click the desktop, get up a menu and then click Configure Folder View, if not pressing Alt & D, Alt & S should open it (At least that’s the keystroke combination on my desktop which is set to Search and Launch)
Once you have the Desktop Settings gui open since you already changed it before I guess you know it’s the layout drop-down box to change the type of desktop to use
Incidentally you can add a Folder View to any desktop layout using Add Widgets on the right-click menu
Thanks Ecky. Yes, I can do those things, didnn’t help. Maybe it’s th KDE version, a bit advanced I think. A few minutes ago I got a KDE Crash Screen, everything went black, then my screen came back to life with the correct settings i.e. came back to life displaying the true contents of /home/john/desktop.
For now it must remain a puzzle I think. At least I can carry on working efficiently now that whatever was being displayed has vanished/reverted to the correct display.
I’m running the same kde on tumbleweed mate and it’s not unstable though I do occasionally see a ‘kde plasma workspace has crashed’ message but it’s almost always something that flashes up as I’m logging out/rebooting/shutting down
I tried to set my layout as Folder View thinking I’d run on that for a day or two just to see what happened, but on my screen if I set that layout it looks like it’s using a resolution something like 320x240, totally unusable (adding a folder view widget to other layouts works fine though))
Could it be that 4.6.5 just doesn’t play so well with that layout yet
