can't reach my modem

ok starting a new thread because my problem is a bit more refined then before.

problem: i can ping my network card but not my modem.

so, as far as i can tell, this has to be a problem with either the firewall or routing. since i have disabled the firewall numerous times, i am assuming it is routing. so, my modem has the ip 192.168.2.1 and my network card has the ip 192.168.2.10
this should work, but for some reason it doesn’t. they cannot seem to communicate. so far, windows and mac os have been able to connect using the above configuration.

i think i am missing some fundamental aspect of suse11.0, but cannot seem to understand it. btw. at one time i got to the modem and was able to change the settings and install the isp data. however, that was once and it hasn’t happened again…even with a factory re-set.

FYI you can always ping your own IP address, even if the cable is broken, so that proves nothing. I would check for electrical connectivity.

as to pinging, that is obvious…just wanted to show that my network card was working. thought the cables could also be wrong, but, as i mentioned, i was connected once. but will be taking a bunch of cables with me when i go next time.

on another note, have been looking at the system logs under network and found something wierd…it is 38(!) pages long and has about 19 ‘unclassified devices’. that can’t be normal…and there can’t be many left that the system can classify. i would be pissed too and not let me into the internet!

but seriously, is that normal? i have uploaded my system network log here. hopefully one of you can take the time (i know…a lot to ask!) to look through it and tell me what i have done wrong. please don’t forget that this is a new installation. i haven’t done anything except tried with the network.

thx!

so, i really don’t want to put pressure on anyone, but i would really like help with this. i have learned a lot, but not enough. several people have looked at the stats i uploaded, but nothing is coming of it.

and just to find out, would it be better to try another linux version? is there one that is better suited for new users like myself? a friend of mine suggested mint (he is on sabbatical and i could just kill him for choosing this time for his dam vacation!!), i have DSL and puppylinux, though i think they are for ‘half’ machines.

at least let me know that i am not swimming in the dark here.

O.K., first things first,

1 ) are you using a static i.p. ?
2 ) make/model of ethernet card ?

Andy

static ip is because i could not get anything with dhcp(or whatever that is called). i have been changing back and forth the whole time.

my eth0 is not really known. i will take a look at it phyiscally this evening, but i think it is some ‘no name’ card that works. i know that it works because it was in my windows machine before it got a motherboard with a network connnection. but just in case, i will take a look at it and try a different one.

thx for the answer. i will set up another copy of my new system report soon. should it be the network one or dsl or the whole system? no answer means network.

purplefool

o.k., as you are using a static i.p. you need to put the modem’s i.p. as the default gateway to access the internet. Give it a try

Andy

deltaflyer i owe you a big hug thank you!! you just mentioned that the network card could have something wrong and that got me thinking. the cards have been lying around waiting for a linux system for about 3 years…maybe they broke (i have 2). finally was able to buy one today and whalla! here i am in the net with a linux computer. love it!!

so, thanks to all of you who helped (deltafly most kindly!) and now i will begin to learn^^

Cool, Glad you got it sorted. Now enjoy
