Can't Print to Samba Printer from XP No Ports

I am using 11.3 with updates installed. I have an HP Officejet j4580 and Deskjet 5700 installed and shared from my 11.3 machine. I can print to both from an XP machine using CUPS ( http://192.168.1.2/printers/printername). When I try to Add network printer, browse for printer, select printer, select driver from the CD, the printer installs, but is not attached to a port, and the buttons to select a port are grayed out. Anyone have any ideas where the problem(s) might lie?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

SO you already have two printers that work fine, but trying to add in a third connected directly to the network, it does not work? Humm, what brand and model is this third printer you are trying to add or perhaps you need to restate the problem. I have two printers, both HP and both connect directly to the network and work with Windows and openSUSE just fine. IN Windows I just install the HP driver set. In openSUSE I setup the printers using hplip as root and use CUPS to configure their options after they are installed. It seems to get the HP Printers to install I must use the manual discovery mode and add in their IP address at which point they install just fine into openSUSE.

Thank You,

I do have 2 printers (HP5700, HPJ4580) that are attached locally, by USB, to my opensuse 11.3 server and shared. I am trying to print to them from an XP workstation.

I can add them to the XP workstation using http://192.168.1.2/printers/printername. They will both print that way.

However, I cannot add them successfully by browsing the directory. When I browse the directory, I can see the printer, and select the driver from CD. But when the driver is added to Printers control panel, no port is selected and the port controls are grayed out.

If you want to access them from the linux server normally a cups uri would
be
https://192.168.1.2:631/printers/printername
or ipp://192.168.1.2/printers/printername

Beside that you have to setup correctly firewall rulings to enable clients
to access the serveur ( that can be tested, if on one of the client you can
open a browser and point it to the https uri )

In cups configuration you also need to setup some rights to allow external
to see and use printers

Could you try to explain what you mean by “browsing the directory.”? It is not clear which directory you are browsing from. Is this fom a WinXP print set-up dialogue or are you trying to connect a openSuSE-12.1 machine to a samba printer?
