Can't print to HP LasetJet p1005

Hi,

I just installed openSUSE 12.3. I had set up my HPLaser Jet printer by installing the properietary plugin as I have done with other distros. My printer seems to get detected and set up correctly. When I submit a test page to print, I get a message that the printing has started and then completed, but nothing prints. I’ve had a look at my cups error log and see some messages there. Here’s what it says. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Not sure what you mean by proprietary plugin. HP printers are supported by hplip in Linux. Have you installed hplip?

I have

/usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-laserjet_p1005-hpijs.ppd.gz
/usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-laserjet_p1005.ppd.gz

installed on my setup as a result of installing hplip.

Thanks. I do have hplip installed. I am wondering if the problem has to do with the message about the port being in use. Seems that systemd and cups both want to use port 631.

Have you checked the Jobs tab in the CUPS webpage (http://localhost:631/) to see what it thinks is the status of the job? And have you checked the Printer tab to see what it thinks the status of the printer is?

I have this problem on openSuse 12.3 x86_64 too.
I use printer HP laserjet 4m plus and when i print test page the printer print blank page.
I have installed hplib Version: 3.12.11-2.2.1
Yast can’t detect printer automatically i have to set manually.

Any help will be good :slight_smile:

Paul_Vandenberg is saying that nothing prints but he gets messages that it has; the error messages suggest that a file is missing; checking what CUPS says about the status of the job and printer may help to detect where the problem lies.

drimers is saying that a blank page prints - which is a different problem.

In both cases, more information is needed.

/var/log/cups contains three separate logs. It would be worth looking in all three for clues.

Sorry John,
I omit to say that cups appear “Unable to open print file: No such file or directory”
, when i print test page.

Then I assume the file has not been spooled; however, really to locate the problem, you need to check the error logs. (I have never come across the problem - so unless someone who visits this forum has had this problem and solved it, the only way to diagnose it is is start with what we have - the status reports in CUPS and the error logs.)

Edit “/etc/cups/cupsd.conf”, change “LogLevel” to “debug”, stop cups,
delete the logs, start cups, retry print page, and look again at the logs.

Afterwards, put back the loglevel to what it was or you will have very
big log files.

Looks like “address already in use” is the culprit somehow. Just sayin’.

Quick google shows this:

CUPS does not receive browsing information
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/304393

In both cases something was starting up before cups and claiming the port number first, like rpc.

Try stopping those services and restarting cups and see if that solves it.

Only systemd is listening to the port besides Cups…

The only difference I observe is that I have

cupsd   1296 root   10u  IPv4  12742      0t0  TCP localhost:ipp (LISTEN)

and this is because /etc/cups/cupsd.conf has this entry


Listen localhost:631

Does yours?

Maybe systemd is listening, and if there is an attempt to connect, it
then starts cups. Systemd is event driven, they say.

I’m having printing problems with an HP Officejet Pro 8000 on two separate fresh installs with openSUSE 12.3

The printer is at 192.168.0.4 and seemingly detected and installed using YaST and hp-setup

The driver is hpijs 3.12.11

With hpijs 3.12.4 on openSUSE 12.2 the printer is working perfectly and prints the “CUPS Printer Test Page”

On the 12.3 installs it fails with

There’s a error message about low ink on a pen (why?). None of the cartridges are showing low ink and, as I mentioned, it prints without complaint on 12.2

I’ve no idea what to do next

So, you are not having problems with an HP LasetJet p1005, as the title
of this thread says. And your problem doesn’t even look similar.

Why did you post in this thread?

My Cups.conf is listening to port 631. So far I haven’t been able to get any further with this issue, which is rather annoying.
Does anybody else make any progress in debugging?
