Thanks for your help.

Were you working from here too
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

You said: “I had the dvd working, then it went away.”
Is that what you mean? The DVD’s were playing OK, now Not?

Sorta. I went there and graped the ten-steps then jumped right into the fire. And yes, the dvds were playing OK, but now not playing OK.

After your post I went back to ‘Multi-media…’ post and found the 11.2 post. A mistake I made was to leave the Videolan repo in the repo list and a number of files were installed from there.

I deleted all of them expect the libdvdcss one and then deleted the Videolan repo. Do you think the order in which libdvdcss was installed has anything to do with dvds not playing?

After setting the repos left as suggested in the post:

| Alias | Name | Enabled | Refresh | Priority |

1 | packman | packman | Yes | Yes | 90 |
2 | Updates | Updates | Yes | Yes | 99 |
3 | Non-oss | Non-oss | Yes | Yes | 120 |
4 | Oss | Oss | Yes | Yes | 120 |

I am now in the process of making sure I have all the packages suggested by the said post, ‘Multi-media…’.

So far the dvds are still not playing, but I have not given up.
At least the dvd is now showing up in ‘Device Notifier’ again.

I run xine from the command line to see the outup and this is what it is showing now:
carl@linux-jh3c:~/11.2Setup/dvd> xine

I will post any thing else you need to see.
Thanks so much for your help.

Actually if you check the post for 11.2 the priorities are different than you quote.

Did you do this
ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

Do you have windows also ?
Have you checked your region setting there. I had to do this, it wasn’t set, so I set it to R2 and all was OK

I did the ‘Switch System with the packages in this repo’, showing in imagebam.com.

I do not have windows also.

What is meant by ‘Have you checked your region setting there.’. I do not know how to check my region setting, somewhere in Linux I suppose???

I can play dvds now, after cleaning up Vidoelan installed packages. And the Switch System with packman and reloading libdvdcss.

I loaded gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer did a reboot and the dvd playing went away. I rm these two packages and did another reboot and the dvd playing is good again.

Thanks

Region setting is often applied to the DVD hardware/firmware to prevent you using DVD’s from other regions.

Don’t worry about it - Good to hear it’s OK now;)
