can't play Audio CDs with Suse 11.2

I’m running Suse 11.2 with KDE 4.3.5

When I put an Audio CD into my drive the device notifier recognises and gives me the options to either play in Kaffeine or KSCD.
Kaffeine gives this error:
Cannot find input plugin for MRL [cdda:/]
and KSCD does nothing.
I have tried in VLC player and get this:
Your input can’t be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘cdda://hx x’.

I have followed the steps here Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums and here Check your multimedia problem in ten steps - openSUSE Forums which made no difference at all.
The second link advised to post the readout from this command
rpm --query --all ‘libav*’ ‘libpostproc*’ ‘libswscale*’ ‘xine’ ‘gst’ MPlayer ‘vlc’ | grep -v avahi | sort

so here it is:

gila@cellar:~> rpm --query --all ‘libav*’ ‘libpostproc*’ ‘libswscale*’ ‘xine’ ‘gst’ MPlayer ‘vlc’ | grep -v avahi | sort

I’m not sure if it’s relevant, but a symbolic link /dev/cdrom2 links to /dev/sr0.
After reading multiple posts in various forums, I’m still none the wiser.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated

There should be no issue here. Check kaffeine is pointing to the cd device correctly

Eg:

sr0

Maybe I’m a bit thick, but where do I do that? I can’t find settings in Kaffeine. I had a look in the kaffeinerc file, but I’m not sure where to write it.

No you are not thick
I can’t see that either. I’m thinking kde3 and other players Eg: vlc

If I put a music cd in - I get the device notification and I select play with kaffeine and it plays.

or ignore the notification, manually open kaffeine and click the ‘play audio cd’ icon in the start view. And it plays.

With starting kaffeine manually and hitting Play CD, I get the same message
“Cannot find input plugin for MRL [cdda:/]”

I don’t think it’s the drive, because I have had the same problem with my old system (also 11.2 and KDE 4.3)

Post out put of

rpm -qi kaffeine

I have got the same problem. I’ve got two cdrom too.

I’m so sorry…:shame:, but in the meantime I decided to double-check the version of kaffeine again. I did have kaffeine 0.9+1.0pre2-3.1-i586 installed and somehow I missed the packman version of 0.9-1.0pre3-0.pm.2.1-i586, which I have now installed. And guess what? It’s working. I cannot believe how often I puzzle over a problem and only when I actually post in a forum, will I see the bleeding obvious.
Sorry for wasting your time, and thank you for giving it.

Good to know you read my line of thought there. Well done!

Well, I did think I had it, but it seems it will only play the first track of any CD I insert.
Just in case, here’s the output

gila@cellar:~> rpm -qi kaffeine

and VLCPlayer still shows the same error message.

If you play audio from your HD is it OK?

Yes. There are no problems recognising Data CDs or playing DVDs. Just with the Audio CDs.
When kaffeine plays the first track, it plays it fine.

What about amarok, is it playing CD’s or don’t you have the latest version?

I have version 2.1.1 installed. Because of all the dependency issues, I haven’t installed the latest version, yet.

You could try it from here:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Backports/openSUSE_11.2

But only if you really want to. I tend not to recommend it unless a user is experienced.

I’m not experienced. Multiple times I messed up my system, by installing stuff, that had dependency issues, so lesson learned. I just hope, that it will be properly available soon.
