Can't open .wmv files - Codec not supported

I tried to open a .wmv files and I get this message:

Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format “WMV2” (Windows Media Video 8)
Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format “WMA2” (Windows Media Audio 2)

what is needed to open these?

Have you tried other media players, and also have “restricted” codecs installed? If you can provide a link to these files, I’m sure folks will try them, I will too.

Was VLC installed from the packman repo? I saw someplace that VLC does support WMV. From what I’ve seen around here, you shouldn’t install it from the videolan repo.

Need to get all multi-media stuff from packman since the openSUSE OS only supplies open source programs and most media formats are proprietary

Please use code tags to stop the forum editor from reformatting computer output and making it unreadable. It is the # in the tool bar

Do a full switch to Packman:

sudo zypper dup --from 7

And make sure that vlc-codecs is installed.
Then it should work.

Also I would recommend to disable (or remove) the multimedia:libs and multimedia:apps repos. They also contain multimedia libraries (without restricted codecs support), soemtimes even in newer versions than Packman.

You just pasted the editor text you must paste the actual text from the computer to not mess up the format. Pasting already messed up format won’t help LOL

But Wolfie has the solution

Sorry, I’ll try again…

LOL no still not right the text goes between the two tags. You put it in the second tag. Good way to do it is to paste the text then highlight it then press the # and the computer does it for you.

Also until you get the feel maybe use the preview to see how your post will look to other before you post.

I put it between the code tags. why can’t you see the info from the command? I don’t understand what you want me to do?

I repaired it. You in fact put the text after the second (of the close tag) instead of before it. Also imho the / of the close tag was missing.

Take care, the repair is only partialy because, as explained by gogalthorp) once it is processed by the forums system into HTML, info is lost.

So please take care how you handle tags. Either first click the # and then copy/paste between the end of the open tag and the begin of the close tag (bwteen ]), or do as gogalthorpe suggests, first copy/past, then select that piece of text and click the # button. It will then place the tags before and after the selection.

And of course, to check how your post will look like, you should fisrt do a preview. Also very good the see typos, etc.
