In my case, the black screen was accompanied by the hard drive light continuously lit (with no activity) and the keyboard completely unresponsive. SO this tells me that it’s not merely an incorrect resolution, but rather some sort of kernel crash.
I got rid of the problem by logging in to the console in failsafe mode, logging in as root, running the command
init 3
Then I logged in as root again and ran
sax2 -r -m 0=ati
This fixed the problem for several reboots, but the problem mysteriously returned the next day. So I went through this procedure a second time and the problem again returned.
So I ended up installing the latest versions of Ubuntu and Kubuntu, which I am very happy with so far. I will keep an idea on this board and see if someone can get to the bottom of this problem. I’m pretty much at the end of my rope with it.
Thanks!
I’ve found a solution to this problem. I installed the 64bit again.During installation, I chose not to install radeonhd which is xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd in Yast.NOw 11.2 works well with my X1300,and KWIN desktop effects works even without radeonhd or fglrx driver. Although there are some display problem in KWIN ,It’s really exciting! THis is the very first time that My ATI works in 3d,haha.
Thanks!
yes, I checked the MD5 before burning.

yes, I have to do that. I’ve tried every means I can think of. But all of them gave me black screens. Now my laptop works well without it.few days ago,I installed radeonhd from yast. after reboot my laptop hanged ,I thought that maybe radeonhd wasn’t compatible with the default xorg video driver.then I deselected xorg-x11-driver-video,and only left xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd .this time I saw the system info show that the driver is radeohd and I was very happy.however, It didn’t last too long .a black screen appeared again when I reboot it…very disappointing>:(…
