linux-vx48:/dev # mount -t ext3 /dev/sda8 /mnt/2/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda8,

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

How do you know sda8 is ext3? The type Linux in fdisk -l output could be any of several filesystems, they all show as Linux. Why not let mount default to auto and figure it out?

mount /dev/sda8 /mnt/2
