Although I did originally manage to login after a clean install of 12.3, now, when I get to the login screen, it briefly flashes (I think to a console) and then returns to the login screen, with no error message.
Another odd thing, is that the login screen seems very 1980’s style, with no images, just the login input box grey rectangle with bevelled edge on a black background. It says “Welcome at linux-bart.site”, which means nothing to me? Is that normal?
Anyway, real issue is not being able to get to a desktop although I can log in at the console window.
I know I could easily just delete the VM and try again, but I don’t want to do that as I’m checking out SUSE with a view to using it as my main OS and if I can’t recover from an issue on my first day from it, that would indicate that I’m not ideally suited to it!
Sounds like you installed a minimal environment. What media are you installing with? Is it the full DVD or Live? If Live, did it boot a live session in the VM
I installed into VMPlayer using the .iso I downloaded called ‘openSUSE-12.3-DVD-x86_64.iso’.
I’ve logged in successfully once already and the screen immediately went to the familiar KDE animated logging in screen and took me to a familiar KDE environment, which worked well. There I updated a few settings, such as enabling the firewall (oh and enabled the network interface!).
Didn’t start looking at drivers yet, since it was all working so well on that front (except at the login screen).
Then it was after I rebooted, that I could not log back in, except on the command line if I switched to a console.
My sincere apologies guys. It seems that VMPlayer led me astray and that the suggestion it makes to allow it to perform an ‘easy install’, hiding the installation options, is not always a good one!
I’ve just re-installed and did not allow VMPlayer to perform it’s suggested installation, instead opting to do it manually myself and it seems to have resolved ALL of the issues previously mentioned.
Please use the Virtualization forum here next time you have a virtalisation problem. That is the place to meet your fellow Virtalisation users. Here it is only by accident that someone asked: do you use virtualisation? You even forgetting telling it.

You are the second one I see today with the same cause for his problems.
