Can't login after latest update

Updated (dup) today, and for the 1st time ever, can no longer log into Tumbleweed.
Takes ages to get to login (that is, multiple minutes), I login, it tries for “multiple minutes”, then ejects me back to the login screen.
Very little disk activity.
Tried logging in with an older kernel - no different.
Logged in to recovery - yep, what do I do now??
Have been using tumbelweed for years - never had an issue, but now…
Currently logged in to the same machine using Ubuntu 26.04 - works fine.
How do I fix this?
Thanks.

If it’s taking minutes to get to the boot screen … what I would do is:

Restart the system, then press the ESC key, so that the boot up messages are shown. You will probably see the issue for the delay. (I’d also video the boot up, which makes it easy to review the boot up output).

Another option (to the above) would be to wait for the login screen, then CTRL ALT F1 for a vterm, then review the logs.

Next, I would boot to a previous Snapshot and see if that works. If it does, revert to that Snapshot.

Thanks for the reply…
Have attached the “different” boot up info - I don’t have a clue what it is trying to say…

Snapshot??
(Off to bed, me thinks… Rebuild in the morn…?)

Thanks.

Well, as you would expect in all things tech-related - awoke in the morning, gingerly pressed the power button, and…
… of course, all was working as it should be!!
Don’t know what caused the glitch, anybody work anything out from the screenshot??
Thanks.

This has now become a re-occurring thing.
Works fine for a day or 2 (possible), then reverts back to this.
Have done a couple of updated in the meanwhile, and has made no improvement.
Is a multiboot pc, all other OS’s are working fine - currently using Ubuntu 26.04.
Have done a memory test - flying colours.
Very random.
Thinking about a fresh install, but wondering whether I have to create a new profile (pain…) Current install is only about 6 or 8 months, and did involve a new profile.

Tumbleweed-latest/Plasma-latest
Normal progs - Brave/Thunderbird/Signal/LibreOffice/Kate/RustDesk, etc.

Thanks.

And on further investigations…
Would this be a genuine kernel bug? Should be reported?

Oops: invalid opcode: 0x8888 [#1] SMP PT1

Searching for “opcode 0x8888” does give me nothing, expanding it a bit did give me a presentation on Breaking the x86 Instruction Set.

In the call stack I see netlink, pfx_nl802 so it could be linked to your WiFi card/driver, can you share the output of inxi -N

Could be some regression, in that news software is triggering this exception, older software will in that case not trigger the problem.

What I think is the best way to investigate this is:

  1. Investigate if it is linked to a particular network driver.
  2. Do regression testing until you find the commit that triggered this.

Can you boot with an old kernel, does that work reliably?

Last question first: Booting to an old kernel gave me the exact same result…
But,
I have now done an update, from the latest ISO, and have a different problem.
Now, can not login to the Desktop, at all. Tried my user, and another ‘backup’ user, and even root…
I get the initial logon screen, input the details, screen goes black for 5/10 seconds, then drops back to the login screen. Have tried different desktops (plasma/gnome) with the same result.
Drop to command line, can login fine.
Thoughts?
Thanks.

If you do debug things, try to be systematic, so “instead of boot to an old kernel” indicate which kernel(s) you tried. Did you try vmlinuz-7.2.2-1-default?

Why did you update from ISO? Why not “zypper dup”?

I am still interested to learn with network driver is in play.

Sorry, there was only a choice of 2 versions in recovery, either did the same, 7.2.4.1 + 7.2.5.1.
Have done zypper dup regularly over the last week, as well, thinking it may be an update causing issues, but at the stage I was at, could not get to a working system, hence my only option (I believed) at that point was to do an update

How about:

And is this WiFi card your primary network connection?

Thanks for the replies…
Have just completed a fresh install of Tumbleweed, and hence going through a lot of pain, at the moment, but all is working great!
Haven’t reconnected my ‘normal’ WiFi dongle, yet, as a little bit wary of that, will probably play with that in the morning (about 22:40 here ATM).

Have reconnected my original USB WiFi adaptor (ID 0bda:b812 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL88x2bu [AC1200 Techkey]), and all is going well, thus far.
Current kernel 7.2.5-1-default, so fingers crossed!
Thanks.
