Can't log into KDE

Hello
I install openSUSE not long ago. I can’t really say i feel comfortable, since i got too much used of Ubuntu.
Yesterday I saw some notification of openSUSE about some updates and I let is do it. But there where to many conficts (actually i didn’t took much interest in it) and every time i made the choice “try again”. That didn’t work out so i choose “ingore the packages”.
After a reboot i noticed that there was no KDE! In the choices before logging in i can choose between logging with IceWM, TWM and failsafe! I thought that i should re install kde through the one-click install (bottom here KDE - KDE SC 4.5.3 Info Page) but i had the same conficts again.
So, long story short, what should i do now? I would re-install the distribution but i don’t really feel like it now. Is there any idea about these problems?

PS: I install the 64bit version ofopenSUSE from a dvd that Novell hands out.
PS: Sorry for the wrong use of English ect, i’m doing my best.

Did YaST tell you why it had those conflicts? Typically, ignoring dependencies (which is most probably what you did) results in a system with packages incompatible to each other. Depending on the exact packages this may result in a desktop environment not starting or even an unbootable system. One should never accept to ignore that.

You should take much more care with the package management. Taking a look at your repositories, I see that you have three different Packman mirrors enabled, one (#2) doesn’t even seem to be a proper source for packages (gives me a 403-error) I suggest to:

  • tidy your list of repositories, cut it down to oss, non-oss, update and one Packman (I recommend to kick the KDE-Factory and Videolan repository as well)
  • then run
zypper ve

…that will check your installed packages for missing dependencies and incompatibilities and (hopefully) fix them.

open YaST, go to Software > Software Repositories and disable these repos:

1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12

leave enable one instance each of oss, non-oss, update and packman

then open a terminal and do these, ONE line at a time and wait until
all stuff has stopped and you are returned to the prompt, then go to
the next line…

CAVEAT: http://is.gd/bpoMD [posted via NNTP w/openSUSE 10.3]

First of all, i want to thank you for your time, i 'm starting to believe that something good while come out of this

I had some problems with yast. I couldn’t run it in a window mode (when i clicked him in the menu, the terminal asking for root’s pass came up but then there was nothing but i messeged i didn’t success in reading, since it closed down as soon as it came up). I opened yast in terminal mode and i remove the repositories DenverD told.

I should note that i run every command twice because the first time firefox crashed while i was writing my reply to the thread. The first time there where more confictions, i supposed that some problems where resolved then. In every conflict i was choosing the ignore choice, since retrying it didn’t give any results.

Take ‘2’ instead.

You obviously have mixed up the rpm-database as well:

Removing okular-4.4.4-1.4 [error]
Removal of (31045)okular-4.4.4-1.4.i586(@System) failed:
Error: Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: package okular-4.4.4-1.4.i586 is not installed

…most probably by interrupting an installation process. You might have borked YaST with a likewise action as well.

Try this:

rpm --rebuilddb

…and then again:

zypper ve

Really, you should be more careful with package management.

…is not a good approach.

I run the rpm --rebuilddb command and then went for zypper ve. I run the second command three times and everything went ok now, here are the results

Dependencies of all installed packages are satisfied.

So the major problems seem to have gone. Should i try to install kde again? How should i do it?

KDE4 should still be present - at least I don’t see it was removed. What happens now if you try to log in?

the autologin gets me to an IceWM enviroment. If i log out and try to choose something else my choices are: preset, IceWM, TWM, Fail Safe

Adding to DenverD’s commands, run “zypper clean -a” before “zypper ref”,

i pressed CTRL+ALT+F1 and the computer went in a terminal like state. I used root as a username and then entered my pass. I soon i logged on (always in the terminal state) i typed startkde and the system told me that there is no such command and i should try cnf startkde

You should NEVER NEVER NEVER try to do any GUI stuff as root!!! If you
want to learn why, search the Forum archives.

The CTRL+ALT+Fx terminals are there for you to be able to do command-line stuff
as needed.

The proper command to be used is ‘startx’, but if you use it as root and you
hose your system, I hope you have a backup. In addition, please do not complain
here how bad openSUSE is. Just quietly restore.

so i shouldn’t use startx. I just installed openSUSE and don’t have anything to backup, i just encounter some problems and try to resolve them, re-install would be the easy way
And something more:
I NEVER told anything bad about openSUSE, don’t be so touchy! I’m a gnu/linux user myself you know… (i’m no expert though)

um, he got the idea here from this forum; VampirD suggested it. and it is
a bad idea, also in my opinion. you don’t have to be root to start X from
the command line. normal user account can do it, with much less likelyhood
to create a (bigger) mess. and the command to do this is “startx”. far as
i know, you use “startkde” from within X.

Yes, I know that, but…, I want to avoid any proble with the user KDE
profile, so use root (only to see if it start not for use it), and the
command startx start the X system with the default desktop (IceWM), the
command startkde start KDE, and if the system return that cannot found
it, there is a problem on the KDE installation, try cnf startkde and
install the package, “zypper in kdebase4-workspace”, I think there still
are some conflicts

i tried to startx after C+A+F1 but i got a message about “server is already active for display 0” and something about “rm /tmp/.X0-lock”. I tried to remove is (it is in the tmp folder, it’s no harm, right? ) but nothing came out of it

i went for startkde again, as a logged user in IceWM, see for yourself

-----@---------------:~> startkde
If 'startkde' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
    cnf startkde
-----@---------------:~> cnf startkde

The program 'startkde' can be found in following packages:
  * kdebase4-workspace  path: /usr/bin/startkde, repository: zypp (Updates for openSUSE 11.3 11.3-1.82) ]
  * kdebase4-workspace  path: /usr/bin/startkde, repository: zypp (repo-oss) ]
  * kdebase4-workspace  path: /usr/bin/startkde, repository: zypp (openSUSE-11.3 11.3-1.82) ]

Try installing with:
    sudo zypper install kdebase4-workspace

-----@---------------:~> sudo zypper install kdebase4-workspace

'kdebase4-workspace' is already installed.

Seems like your rpm-database is still in chaos. You seem to have interrupted quite some installations / updates before they were finished.
I normally don’t but at this point I suggest a reinstall (of the entire system).
