Can't Launch Skype After Installation

Hello to all,

I am new to Linux and rather not skilled at using the Terminal application.
I chose openSuse after reading many reviews claiming it is the best distribution for laptop users.
I am currently testing on VirtualBox before I go ahead and switch OS.

I downloaded and installed Skype but when I try to launch, no joy.
Bouncy Skype icon appears next to my cursor and after a while it disappears.

I Googled for answers and fixes but nothing I found so far has helped.
Probably due to me not understanding the instructions related to the use of the Terminal.

I’d really appreciate any help I can get on this one and I am terribly sorry if this is an old and resolved issue that I did not manage to find before posting.
Thanks in advance to all.

Anyone? I really would need Skype for work or some chat client that would support Skype configuration.

Bastrarsov,

Did you use the openSUSE version of Skype from their site or another version?

Accessing USB devices under virtual box typically requires the virtual box extension pack. In addition, to get a webcam working under skype varies dependant on the kernel module / driver the webcam needs. There is webcam guidance for openSUSE here: HCL:Web cameras - openSUSE and there is guidance for Skype on openSUSE here: SDB:Skype - openSUSE

Yes, I used the openSUSE version that I got from the Skype downloads section.

if you launch skype from command line (rather than using the skype icon) then it will tell you what dependencies are missing or what errors it has encountered.

Can you post the output for the commands “cat /etc/SuSE-release” and
“skype” ?

Am NON-technical, so do most tasks from desktop window (main exceptions are zypper and looking at logs).

Skype installed onto my openSUSE 12.1 using Gnome after followed same SDB:Skype instructions ](Skype - openSUSE Wiki) .

Admit curious when see in logs :

process `skype’ is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT
however Skype still works fine.

Main difficulty was learning -again, how to sign in to the correct Skype account.

That’s a message from the Linux developers to those of skype. It works, but
the API they are using will be removed eventually and skype will stop working.

It is difficult for proprietary applications to keep track with the fast
pace of Linux development. Even for some opensource apps it is difficult.
