Can't install VLC, and audio problems in 12.3 RC 2

I installed openSUSE 12.3 RC 2 x64 KDE Live CD.

I am unable to install VLC Media Player in openSUSE 12.3 RC 2. I tried installing it using packman, and from the VLC website and each time I got the same error. I am missing a dependency called “libpng14” or something close to that.

I opened up skype, and tried to call somebody, but it said “Problem with playback device” I am not really sure what to do here, since my experiance with 12.2 all I needed to do was install “pavucontrol” and everything worked fine. I also installed that in 12.3, but it didn’t seem to help.

Any Ideas?
Thanks!

When I go to install VLC using Apper, I get this error.

nothing provides libcdio.so.13()(64bit) needed by vlc-noX-2.0.5-5.3.x86_64

When I go to install VLC using YaST, I get this error.

nothing provides libpng14.so.14()(64bit) needed by vlc-noX-2.0.5-102.15.x86_64

Not quite sure what is going on here. One thing that is confusing when using openSUSE, is that I am not sure if I should use YaST, or Apper. Also searching for application in Apper is not near as easy as the Ubuntu software center. When searching for VLC, or really any other application, I get multiple option for the app, plus a lot of it’s dependencies.

12.3 is available for software testers to test…i’d suggest until
you have more experience with openSUSE (welcome, by the way!) you
stick with the currently supported version (in this case 12.2)

Really, as you are not used to openSUSE you should not be using the Beta
version.

Thanks for the welcome

Well I installed cause it’s going to released in 9 days, and plus I don’t mind a bug here or there.

I fixed the problem with skype by going to Options - Sound Devices, and changing it Default Audio Device, to the next one down.

The problem is that when you use the beta version we assume you already
know how to use the distro, where to get packages from, how to cope with
package dependencies, the differences between apper or yast or zypper…

The purpose of the beta is to discover bugs and report them properly.

It is possible that those dependencies of vlc are not ready yet, because
those external multimedia repositories do not have to follow beta
development that closely.

I have no idea if your problems are bugs or not.

Restricted formats are usually difficult to get for RCs and betas. Hence it is not recommended for people who cannot “build” their own software

VLC from the packman repo is the right one to install.

The problem is that the required associated packages haven’t been updated yet. You can install libpng14 from here:

Index of /distribution/12.2/repo/oss/suse

you can install libcdio13 from here:

Index of /factory-tested/repo/oss/suse

RC2 has updated libcdio to version 14 hence your problem and 12.3 uses libpng15

Any problems post back

Hey, was trying to do the same thing and found your thread. You’re in luck, you can get VLC for 12.3 from Packman now since yesterday:

Index of /suse/openSUSE_12.3/

Cool, thanks!

And thanks to everyone else who posted
