Can't install OpenSuSE 15.6 on Athlon X2 Laptop

I have used my lapton with OpenSuSELeap a few month ago after an update graphical desktop stoped working. Decided to do a clean new install.

I boot from pendrive and Installer Hangs with message “Loading basic drivers”

My Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A215-SP5816
Athlon X2 CPU
4GB RAM
Kingston SSD Disk

How have you written the ISO to the pendrive?

Is this a 32bit or 64bit system? Which ISO do you try to use with this system?

Yes I’ve wrote the ISO to the pendrive.

The pendrive boots, I choose Install. Then hangs

It’s a 64bits CPU. As said It has OpenSuSE Tumbleweed, that I want to WIPE and do a clean install of OpenSUSE Leap 15.6

Which program do you use to write it to USB-Stick?

I use dd

sudo dd if=openSUSE-Leap-15.6-DVD-x86_64-Build710.3-Media.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M status=progress

I did this on an Ubuntu Laptop (what I have arround)

this hardware seems pretty old nearing 20 years. Possible hardware failing???

This notebook was working with opensuse tumbleweed. After an updete graphical desktop/login stopped working.

I was getting tired of tumbleweed, so decided to do a clean install of OpenSuSE 15.6 Leap. The installer stops working, it’s sleeps for ever searching for drivers.

It can’t be the CPU to blame, an Athlon X2 is still working in my homeserver on Leap 15.5:

CPU: dual core AMD Athlon II X2 250 (-MCP-) speed/min/max: 800/800/3000 MHz

Did you ever check the checksum of the image on your pendrive? Have you tried another image writer? Suse Studio Imagewriter is recommended and always worked here.

Literally “for ever”? Did you give the hang 20 or more minutes, 2-3 hours even, to see if it eventually clears on its own?

Wait 2-3 hours?! That is unacceptable.

Heck, even waiting 20 or so minutes for a non-responsive install isn’t considered proper behavior.

The suggestion is primarily a troubleshooting step. If it gets an installation going, so much the better.

I agree completely! Been using Linux systems for over 20 years … even waiting 10 minutes for a response is a clue something is wrong.

@atarallo_uy … did you perform a checksum on the ISO after download?

dd (as shown by the OP) is the purest there is. And imagewriter can not improve on it.

Havn’t done that for some time, but hitting “ESC” might give more info on which hardware get’s probed and causing the “hang”?

Sure, that may be correct. My point was more to just give it another try with a new / differnt install medium - best with a new download and proven checksum.

I did checksum. The ISO downloaded correctly.

Thanks This is was what I was waiting for. I’m not working very frequently with SuSE. And when I had to install It just installs, without fails. Thats why I’m puzzled

I’ll give it a try, when return back home.
