I actually used # sudo cp openSUSE-12.3-KDE-Live-x86_64 /dev/sdd
writing the DVD version right now.

Fyi I got it from here: linux - cp command to make bootable iso image usb - Super User
Installed Open Suse on the Asus Zenbook and now happily configuring things, adding programs etc.
Do you like me to update the wiki? You wrote that anyone can do it, but maybe it’s preferred that more experienced users do this.

You can, but someone with permissions has to accept the change, and
those people are very few. In any case, few people will believe that
command to work - I did not - and they will take convincing.
I’d try suggesting the idea in the factory mail list. I might do that
later, it will be interesting.

I had better luck using ImageWriter to install to a pen drive.
Pen drives can be picky, so you may have to use different methods.
I interrupted a format of a pendrive which messed it up and found this tool able to restore the drive to where it was detectable again.
Then I used Easeus Partitioning program to format it. I found Fat 32 works for Linux distributions.

It appears that a plain “cp” should work as well, “as long as no
special alignment or block size is needed.”
