When trying to install opensuse 11.2 from .iso file I get an error “make sure that cd number 1 is in your drive” …
I use Asus p5w dh deluxe motherboard, cd/dvd writer. In bios everything is set correct, bios is up-to-date. However it fails when trying to install .iso from DVD, also 11.1 fails to install which was working/installing just fine last week … Also I tried to modify time/date in bios, set different boot options in bios, … Still not working?
It’s not unknown for DVD/CD drives to go bad. Especially as you say a 11.1 DVD you have doesn’t work any more. Try a few other boot DVDs, including non-Linux ones to see if you have a dodgy drive. Of course, check cabling, etc. too.

Try booting from another cd/dvd media source.
If it also fails, all points to a defective dvd reader (cable, laser, ide/
sata port…).
If you can boot from another media, then the problem could be on the disk
media itself. Try burning another one.
I have managed to install from openSUSE 11.2 live KDE.iso,
after reboot I went direct to install, and all went well with no error.
However, what I found strange is that it still fails to install from openSUSE 11.2.iso, after going direct for install it returns "make sure that cd number 1 is in your drive"
I have burned both .iso file the same way. I use 64 bit architecture.
I’m still looking for a solution, is there a possibility of hardware malfunction since it fails to install from openSUSE 11.2.iso?

DVD/CD media and drive units are a bit “picky” to diagnose: they can go
well for some time and then start failing or behaving strangenly. It can
be a bad cable connection (that has an easy fix, and usually I/O errors
are displayed under “/var/log/messages” or “dmesg”), laser going old or
simply that the unit is dying.
That said, we (users) can only make sure that:
1/ The ISO file we downloaded matches its M5DSUM (to be sure the file is
not corrupted)
2/ Burn it in another CD/DVD media (to be sure the fault is not on the CD/
DVD itself)
If all of the above is OK but still DVD/CD medias work 50% of the time
then that could be a clear sign that the drive itself is having a problem.
Have you ever successfully booted off DVDs on that drive before? Some BIOSes and some drives are picky, they will boot off CDs but not DVDs. Or if they boot, they can’t be mounted. And sometimes it also depends on the type of DVD, -R or +R. Which is why I suggested booting some other DVDs, other distros, other OSes, or even manufactured DVDs instead of writable ones to get more observations.
Worst comes to the worst and you have another machine on your LAN you can export the DVD from, you can boot off the Netinstall CD and install from the DVD over the LAN.
In my machine I have two CD/DVD drives, It doesn’t matter if I use 1st or 2nd one (same result).
I burned .iso image to DVD-R at speed of (2.00×) “successfully”.
When trying to do MediaCheck in YAST (openSUSE 11.1) DVD-R fails, I get back “The drive does not contain a medium or the iso file system is broken”. When I’m doing MediaCheck for .iso file (after download) before I burn it, it is successfully verified.
When doing MediaCheck for .iso burned on CD-R it gets successfully verified.
Is there a problem with:
both of CD/DVD drives?
DVD-R media (should it be DVD+R)?
or openSUSE 11.1 / openSUSE 11.2?
P.S. Also when movies/photos are burned to DVD-R they don’t get recognized by the openSUSE 11.1, CD/DVD drives, but when the DVD-R media is used on dvd player it plays photos/movies with no error. Also I successfully used same openSUSE 11.1 burned to DVD-R media in the past that just fails today???
Well if it worked before that stongly suggests that the drive went bad, no matter how much you wish. These things happen. To really find out, see if you can get your hands on a good drive.
Yes, that might be true, but 2 drives are failing, the second one was just sitting in the box since, I was just using one all the time … weeks ago I removed my memory when computer was off… might that be a problem, or anything related to bios/DVD drive?
When I insert blank/full CD media it gets recognized by “KDE device notifier”, but if fails to recognize DVD media? Why?
