Trying to install TUMBLEWEED, on EFI motherboard
It gets to 96% each time, and hangs at installing boot manager with yast2 eating 200% CPU. I’ve left it over an hour, with no progress.
It does this even if I tell the installer /not/ to install a boot loader at all. Still hangs trying to install one.
I tried using GRUB2-EFI but it told me that was incompatible with x86-64 machine.
So, what did I do wrong? What can I configure or tweak to make this install happen?
Okay. That should be possible.
I tried using GRUB2-EFI but it told me that was incompatible with x86-64 machine.
Then maybe you went wrong in booting the install media. It is capable of being booted with UEFI or with legacy booting. If you used legacy booting for the install media, then an attempt to install grub2-efi will fail.
You need to make sure that you use efi booting for the installer.
Also be certain the the board supports 64bit EFI there are a few that are 32 bit EFI. and though 32 bit grub2-efi is possible it is not at all easy and not supported directly.
**harpingon,
Have you made any progress with this issue? I too was experiencing the same issue when trying to install Tumbleweed. I had tried a few different snapshots (2/29, and 3/01 or 3/02 I believe; tried both net and usb media installs) and all would hang during ‘Installing boot manager’. I have successfully installed various other distros in UEFI so both comments made already in this thread seemed quite obvious.
I eventually installed from the Leap iso, then proceeded to do an offline upgrade to Tumbleweed. This worked for me.
It appears that some changes were made to perl-bootloader/grub2-efi in the latest snapshot 20160304. It seems unlikely that these changes would address our issue, but what do I know?

My most recent install from DVD media was with 20160205 snapshot. That went fine. But it was for a legacy MBR install.
My most recent install from live media was last week, installing the “krypton” live system. That was for UEFI booting. The install went well. The differences between krypton and regular Tumbleweed are in plasma 5, so should not affect the boot loader. I would have thought that the bootloader install from live media is about the same as the install from the DVD media, but I could be wrong on that.
I’ll try a dvd media install to a UEFI system maybe in the next week or so. (I usually do a test install each month).
