Cant identify wireless chipset

I have a HP Pavilion dv2000 and can not figure out what chipset I have.

/sbin/lspci brings up the following

I am really new to this stuff so I am sure I am making a stupid mistake. Also, does anyone know where I can get the .inf file from? I took windows completely off of the computer and dont want to reinstall it just to get the driver. Thanks for all your help

Just try this on the off chance
Open a terminal and become su and then do

lspci -v

post result

 grep 4229 /usr/share/pci.ids

Name of distribution and kernel version in use would be far more interesting than several hundred lines of “lspci -v”-output, (why not lspci -nnk, much more signal and much less noise).

There must be a very good reason, why there are so many “unknow device”-entries (which btw. are irrelevant if a device is supported or not, but they give a good hint that there is a “jurassic linux” in use, kernel < 2.6.24/25 for sure).

I am using opensuse 10.2. You think if I switched to a different version it would help?

Could I just get the drivers for the most popular chipsets and try some trial and error? Also, my cd drive is broken and the computer wont run the recovery disks off of my external cd drive to get the driver. I may just have to use the wireless usb card I have for the desktop until I can fix the laptop.

Well personally I’d suggest getting 11.2. That’s the latest and from what I’ve experienced and probably many other’s Wireless in most cases “just works”.

Wireless has improved a lot. Use 11.2.

Okay, new issue. I have 11.2 on a disk but my comp. will not boot the disk off of the external drive. Can I install 11.2 from the desktop.

External drive??

Describe more about your setup and computer

My cd drive is just broken so I have an external one. I am downloading 11.2 right now and I am going to install it with unetbootin. Hopefully this works.

Some folks have had trouble with unetbootin but try it
If that fails do this:

dd if=image.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M;sync

N.B.
image.iso: name here as needed for the iso you have
sdb: your flash drive/ubs device might be different Eg; sdc or whatever

There is a guide here
Live USB stick - openSUSE

I installed 11.2 with Unetbootin and, after a couple little issues with network connections, my wireless is working great. Thanks so much for the help.

Excellent news, well done:)
