Cant get sound into audacity

hi,
Im on XP and am trying to get a 9 min piece of music from
a cassette on my music centre into audacity on my comp

got the line from earphone socket into the blue socket at back of
comp
( there are 3 sockets in a line
then 3 more below them in a line
go the line in socket… blue top left. )

Im getting sound ok on the comp with radio, its playing vids etc well
so I cant think anything is wrong with the sound card.

Playing the cassette on my music centre should get the sound into
the comp and into the comp speakers… but I just cant get a peep !
thanks for any help or advice .

So, did you go into your Mixer and make sure the Line input is turned up and if present, that the capture level/or selector is made? All of this is in your Mixer. If you can not get it to play live, it most likely will not record. The only exception is using a Mic input which may not support a monitor position to prevent getting feedback between the speakers and Mic, which is not a Line Level input problem. Here is the color code for all to see.

green = stereo output, front channels
black = stereo output, rear channels
grey = stereo output, side channels
gold = dual output, center and subwoofer
blue = stereo input, line level
pink = mono microphone input

Thank You,

IN audacity there is an input level and output level… they are both set ok
I start recording and just get a thin straight line.
The only time I get a bit of a reaction on the sound line is when I tweak the plugs and perhaps
get a bit of feedback… that sounds in the comp speakers

but for some reason the sound… music signal from the earphone socket of the music centre just is nt getting into
the comp

I tried using the recorder software in accessories and same result, no signal.

Ive been to control panel… sounds and audio, everything looks ok sound levels etc.

Well, many such problems start with your setup in the mixer. I have a script called START, if you are up to it, to check out your Audio Setup Here:

S.T.A.R.T. - SuSE Terminal Audio Reporting Tool

I also have a multimedia setup check, another script file you can try here (message #40 is the most recent):

MMCHECK - Check Your Multimedia in 10 Steps - Script File, as proposed by RedDwarf

I ask that you create these scripts and run them and ask about anything they find you do not understand. If possible, could you describe the audio mixer settings and what channels you have selected to be viewed/used.

Thank You,

I confess I was not able to get by this first line, and thus have stayed out of this thread. Is that indeed what you are trying to do ? Get the WinXP version of audacity working ? Or are you working on audacity in some openSUSE Linux version ?

If so which openSUSE version?

And if openSUSE, if you post the output URL/web-address provided by the diagnostic script ‘alsa-info.sh’ (which can be launched from the script jdmcdaniel3 noted) we can examine your PC’s audio config … or you can run that script directly with:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh

Of course that won’t work in winXP.
