I can’t get my scanner and printer (all-in-one) to work. It is a HP PSC 1410.
I’ve plugged it in and it asked me to configure it so I did. I went through the printer settings and saved it assuming it would work (it works in Ubuntu by just plugging it in). It didn’t. So I went through the scanner settings, and it’s identified. It says “non configured” so i press edit and it looks like it’s going to crash but after a minute by being at 100 % CPU (laptop fans going mad) it gives me this screen where I should choose one. I choose the correct one, 1410, press next and a box says that it needs “hplip”. I press install and it popped up a box saying “hpaio” could not be installed.
I then opened the add/remove software thingy (never got what it’s formally called) and searched for hplip. I found hplip, but when I checked it for install it wanted me to uninstall hpijs-standalone to resolve dependencies. I did that and installed hplip.
I went through the process again but it still said that hpaio couldn’t be installed. I then searched for hpaio and couldn’t find it.
am I doing it wrong? shouldn’t yast2 do this for me?
Hi
How are you trying to add the printer via YaST?
For HP printers/scanners I’ve normally installed hplip via YaST or
zypper and then as root user run hp-setup. Then use hp-toolbox to
control, never used YaST.
Sorry for slow reply, but I haven’t had the time to reply properly.
Booted up laptop in KDE 3.5
I plug in the printer/scanner into a USB-port and turn the printer on.
I go into YaST2 and delete all printers and scanners which is configured, just to clear that out.
I see a printer which is not configured. So I mark it and press “configure”. I press next because I don’t really know what to change from default.
I press next and then done. Tt saves everything allright and I open OpenOffice.org. Here I write something jibberish, press File - Print, choose the “psc1400series” which is the default and only printer listed, press OK, the printing dialog pops up and disappears again very fast and nothing happens.
I know the printer works because I’ve booted up a Ubuntu Live CD and printed from there (needed to print school work). There it was just plug and play.
I agree I use hplip package from the packman repo and then use the HP tool to setup my HP printer, and it works great. I never use YAST to setup my printers, I find that it doesn’t work very well.
