Can't get out on the internet from openSUSE.

I can’t get out on the internet from openSUSE. Only from Windows Vista. When I try a web address I just get this error message: Server not found. Firefox can’t find the server at Example Web Page

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s
network connection.

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the web.

What is wrong?

larilund.

Are you trying to connect with cable or wireless?

Opne a su termianl and do:

lspci -v

Can you ping your router? Can you communicate with any other PC’s on your home LAN (assuming you have a home LAN).

is your computer behind a firewall? do you have it set up to allow you
to connect to the net?

how about a proxy, did you set up one of those?

your Firefox, if you go Menu > File and look near the bottom, is “Work
Offline” checked or unchecked. (i think it needs to be unchecked)

how is your computer connected to the internet when running Vista?
(ethernet, router, cable box, xDLS, dial up modem, wireless, etc)

when you installed openSUSE (which version by the way?) was the
computer connected to the net then? did you do the network connection
test? what were the results of that? were you able to do the online
update as part of the install, the secondary phase, after the first boot?

If you use a routing device between your computer and the Net (e.g. have an IP like 192.168.x.y or 10.0.x.y) you often have to add in the gateway IP and the IPs of the Name Servers provided by your ISP to fix that error.
