cant get kmail to configure

so far running opensuse has required far to much intervention from me. sorry for the broadcasting vent.

anyway, kMail was working when i set it up. i have tried everything i can think but nothing will allow the authentication to work proper and allow the mail to send.

first when i send i get this message:

The server failed the authenticity check (mail.schmccall.com)

The host name did not match any of the valid hosts for this certificate
The certificate is self-signed, and untrusted

then i get this one:

Would you like to accept this certificate forever without being prompted?

i say forever and finally get this message

Sending failed:
Your SMTP server does not support The server responded: "Incorrect authentication data".
Choose a different authentication method.
The server responded: "Incorrect authentication data"
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
The following transport protocol was used:
email@address.com

i am about ready to abandon this all together and go with gmail.
can anyone provide me with information.

Hi,

Doesn’t look like a kmail problem to me. In fact kmail is pointing out the problem pretty clearly, which I would say it very nice of it.

Have you checked what security the server supports ?

Under the security tab of your configured account, “check what the server supports”

Also you can turn of cert checking in kmail, or get kmail to fetch the certificates for you.

Under the security settings, S/MIME validation.

check your settings.

obviously, i am not security and authentication savvy. i apologize for my outburst… it has simply been challenging to make the move away from an 8 year familiar environment… the despised ms.

anyway, here is what I found in the manual settings:

Manual Settings
Mail Server Username: diana+schmccall.com
Incoming Mail Server: mail.schmccall.com
Incoming Mail Server: (SSL) cp11.myhostcenter.com
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.schmccall.com (server requires authentication) port 26
Outgoing Mail Server: (SSL) cp11.myhostcenter.com (server requires authentication) port 465
Supported Incoming Mail Protocols: POP3, POP3S (SSL/TLS), IMAP, IMAPS (SSL/TLS)
Supported Outgoing Mail Protocols: SMTP, SMTPS (SSL/TLS)

But I could not determine the “authentication method”. How do I determine this?
And what is the difference between TLS and SSL? Which one do I use?
Both are supported.

Please advise.

Ok, I can receive fine.
sending is an issue.
when I send i get this message:

Some parts of this message will not be encrypted.
Sending only partially encrypted messages might violate site policy and/or leak sensitive information.
Encrypt all parts instead?

I would like to sign the messages… I think. But I dont understand encryption and only one key worked. this one:

One or more of your configured OpenPGP encryption keys or S/MIME certificates is not fully trusted for encryption.
The following keys or certificates have unknown trust level:
1.2.840.113549.1.9.1=#737570706F7274406361636572742E6F7267,CN=CA Cert Signing Authority,OU=http://www.cacert.org,O=Root CA

I need to set this up so that it is more seemless. I don’t understand everything that linux is asking me. I assume this is good stuff, because it is giving me more control over the environment and activities.
Please advise,

Are you actually trying to use OpenPGP?? Or have you just randomly been fiddling with the settings in kmail?

i dont know what OpenPGP is. it looks like some sort of authentication, correct? I looked through the KMail settings and intended to turn all the OpenPGP and SMime off… but still got this error.
So, I created a SMime key and now it asks me for the passcode for that key.
Kleopatra is opening at startup. It appears that this is managing the keys.

NOW, I would like to understand how to get the Wallet opened when I startup so I dont have to enter my password but a single time when I open KMail. I dont mind entering the passcode each time I send… though again, I would prefer to do this once per sit.

Anyone know this?

I suggest you start again with kmail
rename this to OLD
.kde/share/apps/kmail

and restart kmail

thank you for the response.
things are working smoothly right now… i am going to sit on it.
the only thing i would like to change is the password requirements. 4-5 entries required per login.

my smtp server is not allowing mail to send. here is the message i get when attempting to send new messages:

Sending failed:
Your SMTP server does not support The server responded: "Incorrect authentication data". Choose a different authentication method. The server responded: "Incorrect authentication data"
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
The following transport protocol was used: myaccount.com
Do you want me to continue sending the remaining messages?

Authentication is set up as Plain.

anybody understand what is going on? what do information do you need, and how can i remedy this situation?

I don’t understand what’s going on, and so I can’t help you. But I would like to offer my support to you about this. I have only just started using kmail and it really doesn’t seem to be transparent. I can receive but not send for basically the same reasons as you, although sometimes the messages change.

Now all you techy people can argue all you like about stupid newbies or whatever, but I have found switching to linux to still be a painful process. I hate windows, but jeez linux doesn’t make it easy does it.

same here, fresh set up on kmail. always have used gmail on the web, hooked up gcal to sync my cal, hooked up ldap to do my contacts, did imap for my mail, and the SMTP is my only problem, lol! i would have thought it would been one of the previous;) any way, i get the same :

Sending failed:
Your SMTP server does not support The server responded: “Incorrect authentication data”. Choose a different authentication method. The server responded: “Incorrect authentication data”

i have tried both google ports still no luck, any ideas?

@zen, switching to anything sux

I feel with you on this one.
I have been a PC windows user all of this century until this year. Mail has been the biggest pain so far.
It seems that a new user requires significant training in order to find the details necessary to optimize and in some cases OPERATE the system.
I am not infavor of, though I AM considering, going back to school just so I can get fully weened from Windows.

Additionally, I am only marginally pleased with the response on these forums. Does anyone know if there is an unofficial OpenSUSE forum where all the users are?

I have heard that the user base for UBUNTU is larger and that the community seems to be more active.

I am 95% decided to leave OpenSUSE. Just looking for time to try out UBUNTU.

Oh, and I finally killed KMail. I could not get the answers I needed to solve the problems I had before me. So I switched to a more universal platform, Thunderbird. It works GREAT… clean and I can back it up when I do the reinstall!! Especially, since there is no KDE for UBUNTU.
