Please do not ask questions in this subforum.

This one if dedicated for writing documentation, howtos. Where YOU explain
to US how to do things. Not where you ask.

please don’t SHOUT!

please PM a monitor and ask them to move this thread to a help forum
(like install-boot-login or hardware), before you post again to this
thread…

and, have a look here: http://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Web_cameras

I am going to lock this thread and move it to Hardware .

I ask that both WEB based and NNTP users do NOT reply to this thread in the “how-to-faq” forum area, until AFTER it has been moved to the ‘hardware’ section.

I will post again when it has been moved which will make it clear to all (including clear to NNTP users). This ‘slow’ process for the move is necessary as to make it easier for NNTP users.

This thread has now been moved from the HOW-TO-FAQ area where it was inappropriately posted, to the hardware section.

Both web based and NNTP users are invited to reply to this thread for support now that it has been moved to hardware. Thankyou for your patience during the move.

@ User MATHERSONPHOTOGRAHY

Please run the command from a terminal:

lsusb

That will list your USB devices detected by your PC’s openSUSE. Please post here the webcam line in the output.
I suspect that line will be something like:

Bus 00x Device 00y: ID 0c45:6270 Microdia U-CAM PC Camera NE878

where you will have different values for x and y

The first place I check for web cam compatibility is here: HCL:Web cameras - openSUSE

I note it is not listed as UVC compatible in the Linux UVC driver & tools page, which is too bad as IMHO UVC compatible webcams tend to work the best with openSUSE. I note it is not listed as spca/gspca compatible in the http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html page.

Further down in the openSUSE page is this section: HCL:Web cameras - openSUSE which refers to the 0c45:6270 webcam. Unfortunately that page is out of date ! (someone needs to update it for new openSUSE versions as it refers to openSUSE-11.0 !! )

More accurately, the driver for that device was maintained here: testing-microdia-driver-draft - microdia | Google Groups but this driver has been deprecated in favor of the sn9c20x sub-driver that is now included in the mainline kernel (2.6.31 or higher). The latest source can be obtained from v4l-dvb: log .

However there is no need for you to go to the latest source code.

For openSUSE-11.3 and openSUSE-11.4 this driver (and webcam) should ‘just work’ with your openSUSE.

Do you have v4l, v4l1, and v4l2 apps installed ?

Have you tried running wxcam (or other webcam app) to see if it ‘just works’ ?
