I have a number of computers on a home nfs network. One of them, called Betty, runs OpenSuse 11.4, and has a Brother DCP-7020 printer attached to it. It works fine on that desktop. Among the other computers on the network is my laptop, which I’d like to be able to print from. Both these computers have the firewalls turned off, network sharing turned on via Yast printer settings. The desktop, has Cups 1.4.6, and the laptop has Cups 1.50.
When I use Cups on the laptop, and ask it to find a network printer, it fails to do so.
Some suggestions on additional things I could check would be appreciated.

I have an HP printer with a JetDirect interface, and the YaST interface has
never been able to find that LPD interface on its own. I always need to do the
advanced option and put the IP address in manually. You will likely need to do
the same.
Err…what advanced option? I don’t see any advanced option either in Yast or in Cups. Nor do I see any place to enter an IP address nor do I understand what form it should take.

You are right. The one I was thinking about is in the hplip setup. You should,
however, be able to specify the printer in the Connection Wizard.

robertsmits;
Have you “shared” the printer via CUPS on the 11.4 machine? CUPS should share on
its own, irregardless of nfs. On the desktop go to:
https://localhost:631
Look under the administration tab. Choose “Manage Printers”, then select your
Brother printer. Under “modify printer” (in the pull down menu), the second
page has a box to check for sharing. You will be asked to authenticate, use root
for the user and root’s password

I’m confused by this talking of NFS network. Is that “network file
system”? If it is, there is absolutely no relation between NFS and
printer sharing in Linux.

Carlos E. R.;
I assume the OP is sharing files via nfs mount(s) and now wants to share a
printer. CUPS, alone, is all that is needed. It has nothing to do with nfs.
