Can't enable NVidia driver ( module nvidia not found ).

1-click installation ( NVIDIA - openSUSE ) resulted in CLI, not a nice, 3D enabled desktop.
Any ideas ? How do I fix this mess ?

Hi
I would guess that you have not updated the system before installing
via one-click? You probably have a later nvidia module installed
that doesn’t match your kernel.

If you go back to the nv module, but logging in from the command line;

su -
init 3
sax2 -r -m 0=nv
init 5 && exit

If you get things working at this point, I would update the system and
reboot for the new kernel and see how that goes.

I’m guessing (I install via the hard way) if you uninstall via YaST the
nvidia drivers installed, then remove the repository that was created
and try the one-click again.

I think for your GPU you also need to use a legacy driver as the 5200
doesn’t appear in the supported products page for drivers seen here;

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

Thanks for you help, tough, system was up-to-date. Anyway, I found where the problem was - 1-click installation gave me the driver for ‘default’ kernel, howver, I was on ‘pae’. Problem solved by installing appropriate version.

Hi,
I’ve had kind of the same problem.
In my case, I just did a Live CD install, and hit the 1 click install.
I have kernell 2.6.27.7-9 default, and although the drivers I’ve found on the repository differ after the “.27” part, they are marked as default also.

The problem is that after that, the system can’t get X to work anymore. When I boot the system, it says:
Failed to load the NVidia kernel module.
Failed to load module “nvidia”
(module-specifi error, 0)

I have a onboard Nvidia 6100 nForce 405 card.
What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Thanks.
Decio

Hi
Just drop back to the nv one as indicated in my earlier post.

If you still having issues, I suggest start a new thread rather than
jumping in on an existing one :wink:

Hi, Thanks for the answer. Before I saw your reply, I was actually following this thread’s advice by caf4926, and everything was okay untill i got this message whyle executing the driver package:

‘/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/build/include/linux/kernel.h’ does not
exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source path
‘/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/build’ is incorrect. Please make sure
you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they
are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure
you have the ‘kernel-source’ RPM installed. If you know the correct
kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source
path with the ‘–kernel-source-path’ command line option.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
‘/var/log/nvidia-installer.log’ for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies.

Also, I am not very used to doing things on the terminal, so how can I update the system from terminal, as you said? And will this correct the problem I faced above?

Thanks.

Hi
Use the command zypper :slight_smile: Looks like you don’t have the kernel source
installed, so;

sudo zypper ref
sudo zypper lu
sudo zypper up

These will refresh, list the updates and apply the updates (assuming
you network connection is up…)

With or without the network run;

sudo zypper in kerne-source linux-kernel-headers kernel-syms make gcc
module-init-tools

Some of the above may be installed already and it will skip them.

If you don’t get the updates done and the GUI working, you will need to
re-run the update to get the latest kernel and re-run the commands to
install the nvidia module for the later kernel (and any subsequent
kernel updates).

[QUOTE=malcolmlewis;2044957]Hi
Use the command zypper :slight_smile: Looks like you don’t have the kernel source
installed, so;

Thanks again for the helping. I did what you mentioned. and when I ran the sudo zypper in kernel… bit, it said everything was already updated.
Then I ran the sh nvidia… and got the following error:

ERROR: The kernel header file ‘/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h’ does not
exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source files
in ‘/usr/src/linux’ have not been configured.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
‘/var/log/nvidia-installer.log’ for details. You may find suggestions

driver download page at Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies.

I’ve noticed that now the problem is with the version.h file.
I have a GForce 6100 card, and donwloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.11-pkg1 package.

What is wrong?

Just to make sure I tried sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia I saw in another post and got this error:

is that right?

Hi
Following is my canned response to the ‘hard way’ check the driver you
downloaded as the newest might be better. Also ensure the downloaded
driver is in your home directory, not on your Desktop.

Have you installed the nvidia driver via 1-click? If not I recommend
the hard way, else follow the easy way here;
Nvidia

If you have installed nvidia rpms via the easy way, I suggest removing
the rpms installed and disabling the nvidia repository first.

You can download the driver for your arch from;
Nvidia Unix Drivers

On the download page, check that your card is supported by the driver
your about to download by using the following command;

echo -n "0x" && /sbin/lspci -nv |grep VGA|cut -f4 -d ":"|cut -f1 -d "("

From the above output use the numbers from the output to look at the
Supported Products List (link on the left) to verify your card is
supported by the driver.

You may wish to ensure your system is up to date. The first command
refreshes the repositories, the second lists any updates, the third
will apply the updates.

sudo zypper ref
sudo zypper lu
sudo zypper up

NOTE: If the kernel updated, please reboot before continuing :slight_smile:

If you don’t have the kernel source and tools etc installed then

sudo zypper in kernel-source linux-kernel-headers kernel-syms
module-init-tools make gcc

Press ctrl+alt+F1 and login as your user :slight_smile:

su -
init 3

cd to the Nvidia Unix Driver you downloaded

sh NV*.run -q
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
init 5 && exit
ctrl+alt+F1
exit
ctrl+alt+F7

The ctrl+alt+F7 gets you back to the GUI (X session).

Now after a kernel update, you don’t need to run the sax2 command, just
the others to get to run level 3, rebuild the driver and exit.

Hi, I’ve followed your tutorial and I think I only needed the reboot, since the driver I downloaded was fine. But now I get an error when trying to run the sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia command. Here is may Sax.log file.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

What could be wrong?
I’ve noticed when comming back to graphical interface, that there an option to do nvidia settings, but my screen is still shifted to the right and it still won’t allow me to have acceleration.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi
Are you using the 185.18.36 or the older one?, if so I would try the
185 one.
Maybe a browse of the nvidia forum may help.

Hi,

According to this old thread from GeForce 6100 not supported? - nV News Forums

But according to this [Phoronix] NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Review](http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=457&num=1)

And trying to look through the old nvidia driver mentioned in the second link I found this Search NVIDIA

Hope this is relevant to your driver installation

I cameback to edit my third link that did’t point to the right place I am referring to. Please try this Linux Display Driver - IA32

According to my 2nd link on my previous post that driver works with your graphic card.
