I’ve been having a problem downloading the file vlc-noX when trying to install VLC. Can’t download in Yast, Apper, nor VLC’s website. Not a big deal, but if anyone can help. Also, having the same problem with util-linux in updates. I’ve tried tens of times with no luck with either.

“can’t download” isn’t too specific an error - what specific error
message do you get? That might help us narrow down what the issue is
that you’re having.

Jim,
Sorry I’m new, so not sure what to write or do. Message I get when trying to download VLC is:
Timeout exceeded when accessing ‘http://packman.inode.at/suse/12.1/Essentials/i586/vlc-noX-1.1.12-11.4.i586.rpm’.
Message for util-linux patch is:
Timeout exceeded when accessing ‘http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/i586/util-linux-2.20.1-1.8.1.i586.rpm’.
Hope that helps.

No problem, we can help you out with that. In general, knowing what
error message is produced is a good starting point.

What happens if you point your web browser at that URL?
I seem to remember that I was pointing at this particular packman mirror
when I first installed 12.1 and it was having problems - I changed the
packman repository to point another URL, but I note that it’s pointing
back at packman.inode.at now. Odd…(maybe it was my other 12.1
system).

Same question - can you download with your web browser? This should be
redirecting to a mirror site, so it could be that you’re hitting a mirror
site that’s offline.

Same thing happens when downloading with browser. It tries, but times out and cancels.
Tried VLC’s site with same results. I believe that’s a different repository.

And same result here. Browser tries to download but times out.
In both cases, other files come through the repos fine - It’s just those particular files and I can’t understand what’s wrong.

If anyone is interested, I was able to install util-linux by downloading the torrent and installing from there. Still having problems installing VLC if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks,
Kevin

What network card do you have? This: 3Com 3C905c-TX/TXM ethernet card
(3c59x driver)?

Yes to both.
K
Thanks, tried but still problems with VLC installing. I think I have all the files/dependancies except vlc-noX. That, for some reason, won’t download from anywhere.

Wow. Sorry then.
Have a look here:

Bug 688454 - Can’t download particular packages from update repositories
except in failsafe mode.

If it is indeed that bug, add your report to the bugzilla. Are you using
11.4 or 12.1?

Let’s try this - go to a command prompt and try:
ping download.opensuse.org
ping packman.inode.at
If that succeeds, try:
traceroute download.opensuse.org
traceroute packman.inode.at
And let’s see if we get name resolution, ping, and a route.

If it is that bugzilla I said, nothing helps - except the trick noted
there. It is a very weird problem. People with that card simply can not
download a certain sequence of bytes because it halts.
Known problem with unknown solution

Well, after fiddling with my wireless ethernet card’s settings, I was able to download vlc-noX. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it or not. Now I have another problem. VLC won’t start when I try to run it. I get the little bouncing thing for a couple seconds, then nothing. should I continue on this thread, or maybe start a new topic?
Kevin
open a terminal and type: vlc
hit enter
report the terminal feedback here
I ran vlc in terminal and it said something about qt4, so I installed vlc-qt and now the player starts.
Thank you, Jim and Carlos, for the support. I really appreciate your help.
Kevin
You are most welcome

Don’t forget to add your report to the bugzilla. It is very important!
