cant connect

ok, very frustraded right now.
installed openSuSE 11.0
recognized my wireless pcmcia card right away.
belkin f5d9010 version 3000 nice treat as no other distros besides ubuntu did. even has the right driver “rt61”
but i cannot figure out how to connect to a wireless router. i get the little icon on the bottom of the screen. i enter the network name;the wep-hex; enter the code
it then says i am disconnected
cant be because i was never connected in the first place. i dont really have a good option for plugging in. i have 3 routers i need to connect to at various times.
have tried 2 of them and nothing has worked.
wlan0 is started at boot. always recognized it. just dont know what to do next

DL this zip archive http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/RT61_Firmware_V1.2.zip and copy the *.bin files into /lib/firmware, reboot, that’s it.

One recommendation: NEVER use WEP encryption when possible. It’s vulnerable and can be cracked in 60 seconds.

i DL the files and extracted them to the desktop.
tried this from terminal
$cp rt2561.bin /lib/firmware
got “no such file or directory”
i tried it in the Gnome GUI
i also got a “cannot stat” during one of my attempts. when i try to open the files it says that there is nothing installed that can read .bin files.

???

what do i need to do to get the files in the right place and what do i need to do to get the files read?

You do not need to run the file - the device driver will load them.

You need to be root to put files into /lib/firmware. Use the following:

sudo cp rt2561.bin /lib/firmware

Larry

sudo cp rt2561.bin /lib/firmware
response
cp: cannot stat rt2561.bin : no such file or directory

i have gotten 3 8mb files. rt2561.bin;rt2561s.bin and rt2661.bin but it wont apparently find them? did i screw them up when i extracted them?
how do i get them again or do i need to redownload them?

by the way im glad to be getting nice concise anwers that are the info i need. much appriciated.

They are where you put them. To see where that is, open a console and enter the
following:

find . -name “*.bin”

That will print the path of the files.

Larry

why do i need to know where they are. i just want to put then where the go. do i need to have them compressed or decompressed? i should be able to move them from anywhere with cp right?

what i mean is how does that affect how i enter the command

You can move them from anywhere, but where are they? Your first failure said
they were not in your home directory. The “find” is to discover where they are.
It is a kind of search.

oh. if the files arent in my home directory i need to do something different. now im getting it. still pretty new to this. i will find them and post where they are.

here is their locations:
john@1896:~> find . -name *.bin
./.fr-moGhS6/RT61_Firmware_V1.2/rt2561.bin
./.fr-moGhS6/RT61_Firmware_V1.2/rt2661.bin
./.fr-moGhS6/RT61_Firmware_V1.2/rt2561s.bin
./Desktop/rt2561.bin
./Desktop/rt2661.bin
./Desktop/rt2561s.bin
john@1896:~>

im getting that so close yet so far feeling.
i am plugged into a wired network for a little while here to try to sort this out. faster than rebooting to windows to use the wireless and then rebooting back to opensuse.
im test driving opensuse for my new desktop that arrives in 2 days. it will use wireless to so this is good to figure this out now. thanks for the help

so do i need to remove the desktop files? and how does their location affect how i copy them ti /lib/firmware??

The command you need is

sudo cp Desktop/rt2561*.bin /lib/firmware

Now do you see why we needed to location of the files?

yes i see. sorry to have questioned you. will boot to opensuse now and try. hopefully i will be back online soon.

thanks for your help

quick question before i go. do i need the star or was that to represent the ending for each file?

never mind. rebooted and was online in about 15 seconds. outstanding help. thanks
