Can't connect with SuSE 11.0 but can connect with Windoze XP

Hello, everyone. I’ve moved this post from the laptop forum by request.

My wireless lappy works just fine at home and in most other travel situations. But on more than one occasion I have not been able to connect wirelessly from a hotel room while colleagues with Windoze computers have been. I’m running SuSE 11.0. Previously running SuSE 10.0.

Examples:

  1. While using SuSE 10.0 I could not connect from the hotel room work desk. But the person with whom I was traveling could connect from the same desk using his Windoze XP lappy. I had to move down to the lobby to connect and go on-line.

  2. The lappy is now upgraded to SuSE 11.0, but the same thing happened in a different hotel. My computer could “see” that there was a wireless connection point but could not connect from the hotel room desk. Again I had to go down to the lobby to get on-line. A different traveling colleague could connect from the same desk using XP.

Any ideas why my lappy seems to have such difficulty finding and connecting wirelessly in certain situations where XP lappys work just fine? Is this something that is hardware dependent? Software dependent? And can I do anything about it?

I’ve read through the “stickys” at the top of this forum. But my problem is not that the lappy won’t connect at all. Rather it is one of “why in some cases will an XP lappy connect but my SuSE lappy won’t?”

Thx!

Many of the drivers in Linux have been reverse engineered because the vendor
refuses to cooperate with the open-source community. Any mistakes in the RE
process may make the device less sensitive. As you carefully refused to say what
device you are using, I have no way of knowing if this is the case.

The other situation is that 11.0, which has a 2.6.25 kernel, is a lot worse at
wireless than 11.1 with a 2.6.27 kernel.
